Three people recently have talked to me about dotmobile. Every time they’ve referred to the service as ‘the student mobile network’ or words to that effect and I’ve always blurted out ‘Do you mean Blyk?’
Turns out there is a student mobile network — an MVNO — by the name of Dot Mobile. What do I know? I’m getting old.
One reader told me that ‘they’re generally hated in the student community’ — something I found strange. I enquired a little more: “It’s because they have stands in Student Unions and can be very harassing, even after you tell them you’re in a middle of a contract.”
Street teams, eh.
I’m sure they’re not all bad at all. The deals look good. I’m going to put them on my list of people to talk to. Have you come across them?
I looked at them last time I was in the market for a new contract/phone.
At the time they charged £2ish per meg for data and didn’t subsidise their handsets much, so I didn’t look any further. Don’t think they did 3G then either.
They run over the Vodafone network. As they post says they often have stands around the Student Unions – they’ve never harassed me though.
What’s their USP?
James Whatley’s last blog post..?Nokia Users? LOVE SpinVox
spun out of a company called JVTV, who did or do run a lot of the Plasma screens in Student Uni’s. Senior staff there were ex Orange if memory serves. I am a little surprised they’re still around. I remember thinking the whole ‘dot-crediting’ thing was a little patronising to their target market, but what do I know..
It used to be a combined allowance of minutes and texts (‘units’).
Now they seem to be emphasising this less on their website though.
Yeah, they sold top-ups of “units” i.e. 1 mms = 2 minutes talking = 4 sms or something similar. They used to hang around my uni (sheffield) alot more than they do now, but since other operators, especially t-mobile (known and loved by cheapskate-students) have brought out better PAYG tariffs, they just look like a network for dimwits who can’t work out if they need more texts or minutes. Actually, that might be their problem – students are usually on the ball about saving money or finding someone who has checked which tariff is cheapest.

Word on the street is they have just gone bust.
No more harrassing from the street teams – You’ll have to hang out in Covent Garden now if you get your kicks from some pest with a clipboard trying to selling something that you couldn’t care less about.
