SMS Text News is going to a desert island next month

Next month, starting June 16th, we’ll be bringing you SMS Text News live from a desert island in the middle of nowhere.

I’m going to be exploring the possibility of working remotely. I’ve emailed Iridium to see if they can lend us a satellite data system to enable us to produce the site. The hotel we’re using will have internet but I’d like to prove a point and detail just how easy it is to get connected literally anywhere.

If you’ve got any ideas for products and services we should look at for this feature, mail me!

  1. Over a decade ago I had a customer who was connecting to the internet through our dialup platform from a satphone from somewhere in the north sea. The only thing more shocking than the slow speed was the per minute cost. It was also a bit flakey so he called for help quite a bit (also at a horrendously expensive per minute rate)… unfortunately on the days when I wasn't in the support guys would always put him on hold for ages while they went away and tried to find out if we actually supported dialup via satphone *smacks forhead*

And you thought Vodafone data rates screwed you!

  2. V good of you Stefan. I will be thinking of you when I am sipping cocktails
    and typing on my Blackberry.

No, wait, there's no GPRS on the Island…

…but the whole thing has blanket wifi coverage…
