I’m pleased to see that o2 has sensibly cleared the way for an easy upgrade path for it’s existing iPhone customers — according to the details on their site (that I, rather unhelpfully, can’t link to directly):
To thank you for being an iPhone fan, we’re offering you an early upgrade to the brand new version when it launches on 11th July 2008. You won’t have to wait until the end of your existing contract either, all you’ll need to do is agree to a new 18-month minimum term contract.
*Best of all, the new 8GB iPhone won’t cost you a penny on our £45 and £75 tariffs. And it’s just £99 on our £35 tariff and new £30 tariff. This special early upgrade offer is only available online at o2.co.uk anytime from 11th July until 11th October 2008.
Take a look at our new Pay Monthly tariffs for iPhone
Then just register your interest opposite and we’ll drop you a line in early July to tell you what you need to do to be one of the first to get your hands on the new 3G iPhone.
With O2 but don’t have an iPhone?
Existing O2 customers can also switch to iPhone. We’ll contact you when you’re eligible for an upgrade and talk you through the best options.
You’ll be able to upgrade online at o2.co.uk, in one or our high street stores or by calling one of our upgrade advisors.
*8GB handset provided at no additional cost on £45 and £75 per month tarrifs when you connect to a new minimum term contrqact. Subject to availability. Connection subject to status, 18-month minimum term contract, credit check & direct debit. Excessive usage policy and terms apply.
Any existing o2 customers like to comment on the current 3G coverage/performance?
No point in having a swanky device if it can't connect….if (rumours being correct) they were capping 3G users at 128kB previously, what will the i3G mean for the network?
/m
As I predicted back in November – http://www.smstextnews.com/2007/11/are_apple_o2…
Smug face!
You sexy mother, Jon!
It was still quite annoying watching Steve on stage doing that speed
demonstration….
I must admit though, I can't stop wondering about that whole O2 3G speed debacle. I'll be comparing the speed on my old an new iPhone's when I get one. And if O2 customer services call me a 'technie nerd' when I ring to complain I won't be happy…
I just want it to be reasonably fast.
3G isn't generally fast enough for my tastes — whether it's on 3, Vodafone
or whoever. I like fast wifi.
Adding BT Openzone to the free wi-fi part of the tarrif should make you happy then.
Just thought of something – there's got to be some sort of browser id hack you could pull to get a laptop version of Safari to identify itself as an iPhone to the BT & the Cloud wi-fi networks. That + an O2 mobile number = free laptop internet access. Interesting…
You're in luck then – O2's adding BT Openzone Wifi to the Cloud offering they currently include.
The Cloud uses MAC address to authenticate iPhones for free access AFAIK.
Still no announcement on the upgrade cost of 16GB model… 🙁
*Does a 'Mobile Speed Test' on his 3.5G N95 on O2*
119 kbit/sec
Not sure if thats good or not..
It's passable
I get 93kbit/sec on Three in central London (3G on an E61)
