This week we’re bringing you an absolute WHOPPER of a show. A veritable whopper.

3. We’ve got lots of news and commentary on last week’s happenings. ( 05:15 )

Lastminute Labs, Google Gears ( 05:16 ), Orange hiring iPhone-fans ( 08:40 ), Nokia Maps

( 09:16 )/Lonely Planet ( 09:37 ), Blackberry Bold’s browser issues ( 10:26 ), IKEA MVNO ( 11:51 ).

4. James Body of Truphone makes an appearance. ( 07:03 )

5. Review of Etymotics Headphones. ( 13:47 )

6. Mobile Industry Review website news… including quick overviews of our upcoming jobs section. Plus: We’ll be at the Future of Mobile conference coming up soon. ( 17:20 )

7. Future of Mobile Conference.  ( 18:58 )

8. Special Sony Ericsson News.  Very special stuff. ( 19:18 )

  1. Ha! Was wondering where they had got to? Always useful to have my N95 next to me ready to jot down anything!

  2. Another awesome show guys!
Would love to give those headphones a go, I reckon they'd be great for blocking out the crap music they play at MK when I'm snowboarding!

  3. Great show! Had a suggestion for you all though, is there anyway you could offer a direct link to download the show? Rather than just the feeds? Thanks!

    -olly

  4. Well I of course am speaking rather selfishly, but I tend to do a lot
of watching of this stuff on my iPod touch.. The problem comes when
the feed is a few days behind the actual post of the podcast. If there
were a direct link to either the main file or the 3gp file than the
touch will take that link and queue it up in the media player…
Basically streams it. Rather self serving request, but I tend to be
better with direct downloads then remembering to sync so that my new
    podcasts can be downloaded!

Thanks all, loving having a good long show to watch!

    Sent from my iPod Touch

  5. Crazy show 🙂 I feel sad sitting here merely watching it and not being a part of it.

Those earphones look great. Just the thing I was looking for to be used with my iPhone.

  6. Crazy and great show again. Really great show…being one of the winners my comment may be biaised but I really enjoyed the show. Well done guys and thanks for the show and the gift.

+1 for an interview with James Body…how many devices again in his pockets?

  7. Since you're running it through editing software, could you release a lower bandwidth version? 30 minutes at 1000kbps should be a downloadable size, like around 250MB. I'll try downloading the m4v file, just because I can't watch Vimeo at work.

  8. Another fun-packed and informative show guys!

Not sure about the earphones though, especially in London. I like to be able to hear if anyone is coming up behind me…

Is the duck available for PAs at all?

  9. Superb as ever – the creative tension between the telephonic trio is compelling.

The bit where Dan received his T-shirt (thank goodness the boys chose the right colour) was quite moving – there was a tear of joy in his eye!

The biggest accolade has to go to Ewan – who must has given up hours of his Bank Holiday weekend to edit out all the giggling and naughty words!!

  10. Great show as ever guys! Really, really looking forward to an update on what's going on with Sony Ericsson.

  11. Today was my first experience of Mobile Industry Review; thoroughly enjoyed it. There are two things which could improve my experience:

    1) Stop the video pausing for a second on a regular basis; we're talking around once a minute, perhaps more (running on a MBP w/10.5.2)

    2) Whatleydude stopping interrupting the true stars of the show with bits of useless trivia.

    I'll be watching again!

  12. The pausing is nothing to do with us — it works smoothly with my 32GB ram
Mac Pro 😉 Were you viewing the Vimeo video or did you download it?

And as for Whatleydude's trivia, it is loved and obsessed over by many!

  13. I was watching via Vimeo video, I'll download next time.

What's your definition of 'many' in this instance? 😉

  14. Am I to understand that the Quicky Mart can now supply me with a SIM card for their own MVNO.
Could you tell me where to order this online as Apu has barred me for putting rum in the Squishy machine.
Please can I win the headphones, they will do a great job of blocking out my sisters constant saxaphone playing.
    Thanks.

  15. word up, great show, so yes you should defo do a proper video podcast version fed into the current audio podcast feed 🙂

then i can watch it on my ipod etc, which would be awesome!

you could encode a lower res version for that i reckon

  16. another annoyingly good podcast, one of the very few i watch on a regular basis… i do believe however that the Blackberry Bold / iPhone comparision has been disproved, in that the Bold dropped back to a 2G connection as opposed to the WiFi connection it was meant to be using, hence the slow download of the content, but what do i know 😉

    keep it up guys

  17. Of course today was the first time in 4 years of wearing that style of headphones (I previously had some Shures) I nearly got run over! Although that may also be due to Oxford St suddenly becoming 2-way again!

  18. … Remind me again how much the data tarrif is oh queen of smug?

Also, you only have of first because it's a Canadian invention… Insert Celine Dion joke here.

    Furthermore… Aboot! 😛

  19. You guys also had Molsen Ice before the rest of us — first is not always a good thing 😉

Oh, and I'll be making a trip up to BC soon, I'm assuming I shouldn't even bother trying to data roam up there as it'll cost me my firstborn?

    -olly

  20. Another blinding Podcast! Ben – really you have nailed the looking down the camera lens stuff!! 🙂 And was so happy to hear my name randomly near the end of it. Thank you very much for the pens, they are damned cool. I was expecting a load of shite, but they rock!

Only comment I would make is that it didn't feel as smoothly edited as the othe Podcasts, not sure why.. but hey ho!

  21. Oh, and naughty Mr Whatley for taking his camera on Nemesis Inferno! Usually if you ask the ride operators they are happy to let you have them. But if you don't ask and they spot you with them whilst travelling up the lift hill they may stop the ride and take it off you. So in future, ask or take it out at the top of the lift 😉

    K

  22. even though i don’t live in England, i do live in New England.
i enjoy your crazyness, and the interesting info you put out there.
    thanks dudes.

  23. I'm still looking for a higher-quality mobile version. Of course I'm sure it will be crazy big file size for that kind of quality 🙂

Maybe Ben Smith will scroll to me the next time free stuff is given out. Maybe those headphones. The question is, are they actually worth 100 quid?

  24. Disqus puked, attempt #2.

Would like a higher quality mobile version, but given how long you chaps go on, the file will be 300mb 🙂

Hopefully Ben Smith will scroll to me when the Etymotics are given away. Or something else. Hope it doesn't cost more to send it across the pond than it's actually worth. 😉

  25. Give us some guidance, Phoneboy —

    We can give you:
    – 176×144 (this is the 3GP format we use at the moment)
    – 480×272 (this is the 180-200mb format we upload to Vimeo and put into the
    Large Video feed)
    – 640×540
    – 960×540
    – HD DVD quality — now we're talking gigabytes though.

  26. Another thought – with the links – 'coming up on MIR' etc.. 'Welcome to MIR' etc. you should get other members of the MIR team to record them – Krystal, Julia, Samantha etc maybe even a disguised MR Operator? 😉

I'm recording my ones for you soon – little fame whore that I am!

    K

  27. It would be great if you had time logs next to the show topics: See my two examples below after each topic. It would make it easier if I wanted to get to a certain part of the show instantly.

    2. We take a look at the 3 Skypephone S2. (2:19)

    3. NEWS – We

  28. I reckon you can't / shouldn't factor in WiFi at all. To the point of disabling it in any test.

This is the *Mobile* Industry Review, and (apart from JoikuSpot) WiFi ain't mobile.

Certainly in Europe, there just isn't any compelling evidence that people flock to WiFi locations. Sure, if you can be bothered setting up a Cloud sub, and you have battled through the logon process you might use it if it's around, but you won't up sticks and hike a mile just to log on at a Star*ucks.

Keep up the good work chaps.

    /m

  29. And what a complete shocker – you gow *PWNED* by Dan over the self-install of the S2!
    .
    .
    .
    .
…got any stats on number of Nokia owners who actually bother using NPC Suite / handset-as-modem? 1%? 2%?

    S2 w00t!

  30. “pwned” is a bit strong…

..and if you want to talk numbers, let's talk actuals.

1-2% of all Nokia users use their handset as a modem.
Would we say that, in actuals, that number will be greater than that of S2 Handset owners?

    *yawn*

It's a nice phone dude, but your anti-nokia bandwagon does get tiresome sometimes.
And this is coming from the guy who was *actually* impressed at the Sony Ericsson party last night…

  31. Some say his middle finger is actually an antenna and that when he's REALLY concentrating, all the radios nearby go “dit ditty dit dit dit duuhhhh dit dit ditty dit duhhhh dit dit dit”

  32. <3rd go at this – what's up with Disqus?>

No anti-Nokia here chap, looking at the 3 of them on my desk…just anti-silly ideas, like having to download stuff to, er, download stuff.

Bet you dinner somewhere nice that the % of S2 users eating HAM (Handset As Modem) will waaaaaaaay outstrip Nokia users eating HAM within a month. And that the split will just accelerate.

This is the lesson vendors should learn. Must learn. Will learn. Have learned from the runaway success that has been self-install USB dongles.

'Actuals' mean nothing. 'Actuals' (as my man Roger Waters once quipped) make Grease a better record than Graceland.

    Pip pip!

    /m

  33. I know this is late, but I just got around to watching this episode. I have to say I feel like podcasts and the like are generally a waste of my life. Not so in this case! Nice one guys.

  34. Any chance of getting this syndicated out via iTunes? – it would make it much much easier to download onto my iPhone for a comfortable off-line viewing experience (and would undoubtably allow the show to reach a MUCH BIGGER audience)!

  35. Yes – this is coming this week. iTunes has a few more tagging and graphicing hoops to jump through that I want to (try) to get right before we submit.

  36. Just catching up on my MIR TV.

So, here's a weird thing that happened recently. I went to our new IKEA here in South Florida. As usual in large buildings down here, there is no reception. What is weird, however, is that my phone, an n82 for which there is no 3G in America, displayed the 3G symbol while I was walking around. I tried to access a website, which didn't work, of course, but it was strange.

Only time I've seen the 3G symbol since getting this phone.

  37. you're prolly picking up some security system signals mixed in there.
my 400 dollar radar detector gets false alarms all the time too.

  38. you're prolly picking up some security system signals mixed in there.
my 400 dollar radar detector gets false alarms all the time too.

  39. I believe that Canadians are more trusting of their financial institutions, and electronic banking in general, than our neighbors in the US. I don’t know what it’s like in the European Union, Australia, Africa, Asia, or other parts of the world. Your personal financial situation also influences your trust in financial institutions and your openness to electronic commerce. http://www.chase.com I would argue that people who aren’t living paycheck to paycheck to get by in life are more open to things like direct deposit, automated payments, debit cards, and so on because they have some disposable income.

  40. This is an interesting post. You should submit it at yearblook.com/submit.php. Yearblook is a competition to find each day’s best blog posts. At the end providian.com of the year, the 365 best posts (1 from each day) will be published in a book (a real, printed book, you will find it on Amazon).

  41. There is another link under the category of personal finance but it has nothing to do with finance. If you have difficulties in making payment, you can click the link named wachoviabank.com. You will have an expert helping you to fix your problems and you don’t have to go out of your home to get the service. What you need to do is to choose a button between the two “call us today” and “we’ll call you”. Don’t you think this service shows the attentiveness and consideration of the Wachovia? It’s really good in my opinion.
