Firmware Upgrade available for the E90 Communicator

The keen eyes of Steve over at AllAboutSymbian have just come across an update available for Nokia’s E90 Communicator. Currently running firmware version 210.34.75, Nokia has made the jump all the way to v300.34.84.

Initial reports by him suggest that the following changes have been made:

  • Much faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)
  • Nokia Maps 2.0 now built-in
  • Download! application updated (v 3.1.736)
  • Cosmetic upgrade to Music player
  • Update for Flash Lite 3 and Flash video
  • Wi-Fi improvements
  • New baseline for VoIP
  • Realplayer supports FLV format (i.e FLV files can be played directly like MP4)
Even though my E90 is not my primary phone, I’m going to go ahead and install the upgrade for myself. It’s going to be one big task for me, since it’ll require me installing Windows on my MacBook Pro first.
Update: Ricky tells us that the upgrade has problems with Blackerry connect, so you might want to hold off a while longer.
Update 2: I had a weird problem with the display right after the phone started up after the update. While the inner display did not show anything, the external display displayed the following.

  1. Ewan – we've discovered that the update breaks compatibility with BlackBerry Connect, so if you use that, you may want to hold off.

Also, if you run into trouble getting the update to go properly, try backing up your phone, and then hard resetting it (*#7370#). That helped me out, and the E90 doesn't have UDP, so you'd basically have a formatted phone after the update anyways.

  2. I applied it yesterday (ended up needing to do a battery out reset).

Strange thing is that it is not even the latest version of Maps included!
