The T-Mobile G1 coming shortly

Quoting our Tech Contributor, Dan Lane, on the T-Mobile G1:

Every time I read something new about the G1 I want one even more… did you know it does Growl-like notifications?!

G1 excitement is building big time and we’ll be bringing you a first look at the retail version of the device toward the end of this week.

I can’t wait…

Who’s going to get one on Thursday?

  1. I'd really love an Android handset, but knowing they'll be available in all shapes sizes and networks means I'm not as inclined to rush out and sign a contract for 18 months as I was with the iPhone.

  2. My friend Brad has been having loads of fun with his Android handset (presumably a G1):

    Part Two: http://brad.livejournal.com/2394707.html

    He also says:

“Yeah, it's wonderful not needing anybody's permission.

I can just put apps online and set my webserver's mimetype mappings appropriately and install applications directly from the phone's browser. No certifications or applications required.

And the SDK is lovely. Great command-line tools & great Eclipse tools. And near-perfect emulator. (“near” because I still need to use the real phone to test things like Wifi scanning, but installing to the app vs. the emulator is a trivial change, and they're both the same speed to deploy to…. couple seconds)”

    I remain quietly jealous 🙁

  3. Hmmm might have to get one then 🙂 gotta admit I'm quite pleased with the iphone dev tools (obviously apart from the openness thing).. Ahh well just another platform to include.

  4. Am interested but the prospect of £40 for 18mths (£720) is a little steep for someone who has a desk job and uses less than 200 mins a month.

I mean, it is starting to make the iPhone look cheap!! don't tell Steve, he'll be really pissed

  5. We rushed out and bought a couple of US T-Mobile G1s.

Hood news is that UK T-Mobile SIMs work in them without unlocking!
