We were invited to the launch of the new N86 8MP yesterday and were amongst a small group of blogs given first access to it.

During filming we noted the handset was labelled as ‘N85 8MP’ and speculated whether that was a late change in naming (extending the N85 range like the N95 did with several variants) or just a disguise or an error. Having spent some more time with the device and noted the ‘N85’ term cropping up in some of the software config (the Exif camera data – other areas use the anonymous ‘NXX’).
We now think a late branding change is the most likely explanation – possibly to extend the life of the current N85 and highlight the sheer number of differences between the two devices (which go beyond just the imaging components).

Did you take any photos with it? Is the 8 megapixels really an improvement or not? Do tell.
The product manager (or was it a PR person?) had told me that it was a typo…sounds unlikely, doesn't?
No – not a hangover, but only about 4 hours sleep… 🙂 You should have seen Dan!
We did take a test image (http://tr.im/gByJ) but as noted elsewhere it's not great… possibly the failings of a prototype phone (which this was). However, the sample images we've seen which Nokia say were captured with the phone are seriously wow… Don't think 8MP matters, but the flash, shutter, wide angle and operating speed all make it an excellent imaging handset. Sadly these factors will be overlooked by many.
Told me that too (hence my comments in the video) but am dubious now.
This device is looking to be a Nokia classic… I just wish that there were more photo samples kicking around. Guess we’ll just have to wait until June.
