Have you upgraded to the iPhone 3GS?

Are you one of the million who upgraded to the iPhone 3GS over the weekend?

What a performance by Apple!

On Friday in San Francisco, I popped over to VSC Communications to check out Michael’s new iPhone 3GS. He was absolutely ecstatic with it.

I mean *ecstatic*.

Me, well I looked at it… there’s no visual difference, of course. So I wasn’t entirely blown away. I just thought it was nice.

I really, REALLY liked the camera. Indeed I think I could potentially see myself dumping a secondary ‘high quality camera phone’ in favour of the iPhone 3GS camera.

But I wasn’t as blown-away as Michael clearly was.

Until, that is, I picked up my own iPhone 3G later in the evening and recognised the difference.

The iPhone 3G is SLOW. Really SLOW compared to the 3GS. The speed definitely, definitely helps.

The more I am using my iPhone 3G, the animation and performance delays (that never worried me before) are beginning to seriously annoy me.

I shall be on the phone to o2 shortly.

  1. I found the opening and closing of apps — and the camera — about 2-4 times the speed. I didn't have my old 3G next to me, so this is just anecdotal.

  2. Gruber @ Daring Fireball has done some side-by-side comparisons of app launch times. The 3GS is postively zippy compared to the 3G. Still too damned expensive to upgrade with O2 though!

  3. I have got one, writing a post about the experience. I think its more polished than other phones I've used and it does the basic PIM stuff better but it isn't the head and shoulders above everyone else like you'd believe what you read. Really unimpressed by the lacquer finish of the phone, its not very tactile.

  4. Picked one up on Friday morning (yeah I know – what a fanboy) but finally been pulled in to the world of proper phones and so far loving it.

Having played with other's 3G phones, it's defo quicker and the camera is noticeably better (but you wouldn't be replacing any proper camera with it anytime soon, but then you wouldn't be with any phone cameras!).

Fiddled with friends' Blackberrys before and this has a far better UI and a generally “nicer” experience, plus you don't look like you should be driving a Mondeo with your suit jacket hanging in the back window!
