Trying to destroy the Sonim XP3 handset

We popped over to the Sonim stand on the last day of Mobile World Congress and…. yes, we put Dan in charge of the interview. He has been fascinated with the Sonim indestructible handsets and couldn’t stop looking at the hammer on the desk whilst Christophe from Sonim was telling us about their new range.

Annnd then we let Dan loose.

With a hammer.

And his HUGE boots.

First, you’ll see him stepping and jumping on the Sonim XP3 packaging. Rumour has it, the material might even stop a bullet, although we didn’t get that verified. That in itself is worth a purchase.

Then Dan couldn’t keep his hands off that hammer. WHACK. WHACK. WHACK.

And then Dan spotted James walking along the corridor towards us. And promptly threw the phone at him. Then down the stairs. Then stamped on it and threw it down the stairs.

And then engaged the bystanders (a bit of a crowd had formed) and asked them to stamp on it. And… You know what, get a coffee, sit down and watch this…

  • I love the Sonim and just had to walk away from the stand with one, I've since used it to make calls and tweet in the shower (it has Opera Mini built-in).

  • Dan, why do I get the feeling from these videos that this was the absolute high light for you at MWC? You look like a kid in a candy store (or more appropriately a kid at a construction site that has been given a sledge and pointed at a wall needing demolishing).

    Hello there, I'm a clumsy long haul lorry driver and I just got one of these phones to replace the (tough but probably but not that tough) Nokia 5140i I had for years before.

    Standard duty for my phone includes (and is not limited to):

    - Dropping it from the bunk in the top of the lorry to the bottom while half asleep
    - Dropping it from the lorry altogether (about 2.5 metres to the tarmac)
    - Sliding it across 2 metres of dashboard and then smashing it into the side window while sharp turns
    - Smashing it into the windscreen during emergency stops
    - Making and receiving calls while loading/unloading in the pissing rain as well as subjecting it to occasional coffee baths

    For this purpose I think it's a perfect piece of kit, and especially since I only ever use my phone to make calls , send text messages and wake me up, I'm not really missing any of the features other phones have! (Who needs all that when you carry a laptop and a digital camera on board anyway.)

    Might add the rubbery underside is a dream as well, you can put it on angled surfaces and it won't slide off like 99% of other phones.

    All in all I'm well chuffed with it, you can bury me with this phone (and it'll probably still work) !
