No GPRS for iTunes or 10MB files allowed

untitled

Apple must still be patting themselves on the back over the two key announcements at Macworld this week, from downloading music tracks direct to your iPhone and iTunes going all DRM free. Only two staffers at UK’s CNET have stopped the party happening by inadvertently uncovered to major faults, with one of those joyous breakthroughs.

Whilst running through the new features and trying them all out by leeching tracks straight on to the 3G iPhone they encountered not 1, but 2 problems that weren’t disclosed in the T & Cs.

You can’t download tracks over a certain size from the carrier connection, as the ceiling’s limit is just 10MB. Only a short time ago Apple heralded in the availability of podcasts over iTunes, with a resounded success story surrounding it. This will surely scarper those benefits, as a great deal of podcasts seen around today are well in excess of that file size. All very much a bruised Apple in our opinion.

The other issue they discovered which will undoubtedly upset the proverbial Apple cart, is to do with a good connection allowed for direct downloading, or not as the case most certainly is.

Not everyone and at every possible moment will be able to get the best signal on their iPhone. So why in Job’s name have they limited iTunes to just 3G and EDGE. As apparently Apple has left out in the cold GPRS, therefore crippling the service unless you have a clear and strong signal. Once again, the shine has faded from the Apple.

If they had a collective foot to speak of, they’re most certainly have been shooting themselves in it quite regularly of late.

Apple iPhone 3G unlocked - what now?

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

After fellow contributor Dan Lane figured out how to unlock the Apple iPhone 3G with just 16 pounds and a hole punch (full details including a video coming on Monday’s video podcast), I’ve been considering the way ahead for me.

I think the ultimate iPhone 3G experience must be on UK network operator, 3.  Their data network really is something special.  Trouble is, I can’t remember where I put my 3 SIM.   I think I might need to acquire another one.

Should I ‘unlock’ my o2 iPhone?  I think I’ll try it out.  I’ve been thinking carefully about whether or not to upgrade my iPhone’s o2 price plan because I’ve begun using it more and more as a primary handset.  Primary handsets aren’t good when they come with something shocking like 75 minutes and 75 texts inclusive.

Or I could use my Vodafone SIM, too — that’s currently my primary number.  How convenient!

There is the added arse of having an 18 month o2 contract.  Decisions, decisions.

Anyway, standby for the video podcast this week.  You’ll see Dan Lane unlocking a Nokia N95, real time, in the middle of Covent Garden.  Then you’ll see the same happen again with the Apple iPhone 3G.  (The very same one that took him 8.5 hours in a queue at the Apple store to acquire).

Carphone Warehouse will stock the 3G iPhone

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Just got this in from Rebecca at Carphone Warehouse:

Following this evening’s announcement from Apple on the launch of the next generation 3G iPhone, The Carphone Warehouse has confirmed that it will be the only independent mobile phone retailer to be stocking the handset when it is released in the UK. The Carphone Warehouse has more than 800 stores across the UK.

Good news, good news. I’m looking forward to pricing news - that’s coming tomorrow morning!
