samsung-acme-i8910-05

On Wednesday we brought you exclusive news of a new Samsung phone being launched on Monday. Now images have ever-so-coincidentally appeared on the mobile news site Daily Mobiles of an unannounced phone, which could very well be the Samsung Acme i8910.

The website has some stunning high quality pictures located here, showing off Samsung’s 3rd 8megapixel handset in all its glory and splendour.

If rumours floating around since the press pre-briefing earlier on in the week are to be believed, the phone does seem to be wowing the crowds.

One of the images seen here has a size comparison against the BlackBerry Storm, which from our own measurements on our own phone shows the Samsung screen size as being a whopping 3.5-inch monster. This trumps their previous 8MP incarnations of the i8510 2.8-inch and the 3.2 of the Pixon.

Just to refresh your memory, the i8510 was their slider handset and the Pixon was the slimmest touch screen 8megapixel phone that came out last year. One of the beefs most had with the latter phone was the lack of inbuilt memory, with only a minuscule 200MB onboard when their other large camera phone came along in 8GB and much later a 16GB.

From what we’ve heard, this new phone will almost sit in between those two handsets by offering up a full touch screen mobile and coming along in 8GB and 16GB varieties. Hurrah!

We’ll undoubtedly keep you informed of what’s what, when’s when and how’s how when we know too.

Samsung gets another 8megapixel camera phone

Those Korean electronics giants have now added a third massive megapixel monster to their range, seen in the Samsung S8300.

The new phone which comes along in the former of a slider is due out March, according to reports on daily mobile.

Their first outing the i8510, also known as INNOV8 in parts of the world, was the first ever shipping 8MP device in the UK.

The second phone was a full touch screen mobile, the Pixon also boasted to be the slimmest 8megapixel around. This measured up to being just 13.8mm thick and beat LG’s similar model by only 0.1mm.

Samsung’s S8300 knocks them all into touch, by coming in at paltry 12.8mm. No noise has really been made about this yet, although we’re expecting them too and loudly.

Other dazzling features of the model are its 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen, and support for HSDPA.

No word has been uttered yet if it’s Tri or Quad band, we’re assuming it’s the latter as the previous two incarnations were.

Nor has there been any word on WIFI or 3G either, but seeing as there’s mention of HSDPA we’re taking an educated guess here and assuming it’s onboard.

There’s mentioned of a duraluminum chassis, which is also good to hear due to its anti-scratch and anti-fingerprint abilities.

This leak must have thrown a large spanner into their surprise expected announcement at Mobile World Congress, seeing as nearly every possible angle has been photographed here and the news is now out.

NokiaWorldWatch: The 8 megapixel question – where are the handsets Nokia?

Friday, December 5th, 2008

One of the more puzzling aspects of Nokia’s portfolio that has been bothering us of late is their higher-end megapixel range, or more appropriately the lack thereof.

With the likes of Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson all having an 8 megapixel offering in the normal and touch screen varieties, we’re wondering when the Finnish phone makers will be coming into the picture.

Whilst at Nokia World we thought we’d get an answer to our recent ponderings, seeing as everyone we needed to speak to were all on hand and available to help.

We discovered although they were not averse to the idea of an 8MP camera phone, there are some factors to be considered.

A spokesperson from Nokia laid out the following to us in a rather agreeable manner, which made a lot of sense. It also showed that many others seem to have jumped on the high-end megapixel band wagon without taking serious consideration.

There are three areas of focus on how well a camera on a mobile operates: image quality, lens and processing software. The latter makes the biggest impact on how well the image quality taken really is at the end of the day.

The lens can obviously make a difference, which is why everyone always mentions the maker as soon as possible in their press release. All to endorse whom they’ve partnered with, hoping the name will stand out and win them favour over others.

The compression software is also key too, on how the photo is reduced and stored in its jpeg format.

Nokia put it to us there wasn’t much difference in the 5MP and 8MP image quality, and on some systems the image can be much worse than a 5MP version.

They gave us an example to test out, one of the ones actually applied in buying a real camera. Try taking three types of photographs. Take one in low light, one when it’s dark and another when it’s bright – and then match up the picture quality.

They believe from what we will gather their images will stand out over the 8MPs around today, we’ll put this to the test at a later date. Faults we’ve been told to look out for are artificial casting amongst others.

In terms of storage size between the two variants, the difference is vast. Try sending 5 and 8 megapixel images over 2G and watch the weeks fall off the calendar, it’s really not fun.

We’re sure we’ll see a Nokia 8MP handset within time, but they seem quite confident in their 5MP camera performance for the time being.

World’s slimmest 8megapixel camera phone gets a breath of fresh air

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

With a headline that will be lost on some, Samsung’s 8MP Pixon touch screen camera phone gets an exposure on O2.

This builds on from their first 8 megapixel i8510 phone launched in August, along with almost marrying the full touch screen abilities of their Omnia i900.

Recently LG made the claim of having the slimmest touch screen 8MP mobile around with their KC910, which measures up to being 107.8 x 55.9 x 14 mm in size.

Samsung now takes the crown away with its 107.9 x 54.6 x 13.8 mm M8800 Pixon. What a difference .2 of a millimetre makes to a headline.

Somebody once said ‘With enormous power comes great responsibility’, we’d like to equate that with memory instead. Our version goes along the lines of ‘With enormous megapixels should come great memory’, which isn’t the case here sadly as there’s only 200MB of built-in storage

With the i8510 they got their act together and released two models, an 8GB and another in 16GB. Seeing as the average file size of an 8MP photo is around 2MB, you don’t really get many megabytes for your the buck as compared to other sizeable camera phone they have.

Other features it has worth mentioning are the 3.2-inch LCD screen, x16 digital zoom, geo-tagging, Shozu sharing, dual power LED flash, online widgets, quad band GSM with 3G connectivity.

It even has DivX and XviD playback on the video front, integrated GPS and AGPS, FM radio with RDS and even a TV Output.

The talk time appears to be around 3.5 hours, with standby being noted as 290 hours.

Samsung has backed this single handset with a £4.5million for a marketing campaign, with the theme being ‘capture the unexpected’. This is aiming to get people to use this phone for capturing that odd shot that comes along once in a lifetime, such as Steve Ballmer using an iPhone or Steve Jobs a BlackBerry.

Although not on their website as yet, we’ve seen tariffs starting at £25 with the phone costing £99 and £35 with the handset being free.

If you liked their Omnia i900 and the i8510 INNOV8, this could be a touch of the picture perfect for you.
