Nimbuzz updates for Touchscreen, WinMo phones and Location Services

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The folks over at Nimbuzz have just announced an update which brings a whole lot of new goodies for the consumer. We first covered the app back in May and since then, they’ve been hard at work to bring us these following features.

1. Location Services:

While this feature was already available in the S60 version, seeing its popularity, the same has now been added to Java phones and the Blackberry phone. Users can now share their location and view the locations of their buddies who are connected and online.

2. Regional Translations:

Indonesian, Russian and Polish language support has been added to the list of officially supported languages, taking the count to 11.

3. Support for Windows Mobile Phones

Nimbuzz has finally added support for Windows Mobile Phones. So if you have one or have friends who use a WinMo device, this is a good time to invite them onto the network.

4. Support for Touchscreen phones:

The folks have now brought Java touchscreen phones such as LG Viewty or Prada, Motorola’s ROKR E6 and other such phones under their support roof. Users can now call, chat, text, use location services, exchange files and photos and even visit chatrooms.

Will Steve turn off your iPhone apps? And what else is he hiding?

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

It’s always the way. You charge the space fortress, breach its defenses, set a bomb in the heart of the enemy base and then flee only to discover that your spaceships and weapons have been created by your enemy and he has the stop button to both.

Returning from the world of sci fi. You charge the corporate building, breach its sole security guard, set a virus using your iPhone and then flee only to discover you’ve raided Apple’s corporate HQ and he has a button to stop your virus.

And he does too.

According to Electric Pig:

If you’re poking away at your iPhone and your app suddenly stops running don’t complain to Apple, chances are it was Steve Jobs’ own doing after he confirmed Apple has the power to turn off iPhone apps at the touch of a button.

The kill switch is apparently for our benefit and is there to protect us from malicious programmes. Speaking to the WSJ, Jobs said: “we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull.”

It’s probably good that Apple have thought this through but it does give you a sense of the willies that one man can wield so much power - could he simply turn off all MS apps?

Apple boss confesses iPhone kill switch exists

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

Remember all the to-ing and fro-ing, rumourmongering and discussions about the iPhone kill switch discovered late last week with the potential to disable iPhone apps? No one was quite sure if was meant to give Apple ultimate editorial control over your mobile, or was just some throw away piece of code.

The answer? It looks like option one.

From an interview with Apple CEO Steve Jobs in the Wall Street Journal (it’s tucked away right at the bottom):

Mr. Jobs confirmed such a capability exists, but argued that Apple needs it in case it inadvertently allows a malicious program — one that stole users’ personal data, for example — to be distributed to iPhones through the App Store. “Hopefully we never have to pull that lever, but we would be irresponsible not to have a lever like that to pull,” he says.

Surely it’s more irresponsible to allow the program on the App Store in the first place? Is this Apple’s way of telling us its checks and balances aren’t as good as they should be?

Discovering the N82: Your application suggestions please!

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Ricky here, I wanted to let you know about a new miniseries I am going to be doing on SMS Text News over the next few weeks. Its name I hear you ask? Discovering the N82, so what is this all about then?
As you may or may not as well as using Blyk, my main provider is T-Mobile with a Nokia 6300. I have never owned a Series 60 phone, so therefore I will bringing you a range of posts on how I get along with the N82. I am sure you are all wondering why a contributor on SMS Text News has never used N series; the reason is quite simple cost and T-Mobile’s crap handset offerings.

Now in preparation of getting the N82 I need your help with applications I should try out, currently I have only used the Gmail Checker on my 6300. If you have any suggestions on what applications I should try on the N82 obviously Shozu and QIK are mentioned a lot on the site, however if you can think of any more that I should try then please post them below.

WOM World has kindly put some applications on for me and some N-gage games as well.

• SkyeCaller PRO – A neat little application that lets you personalise your handset to the extreme, with incoming, outgoing video ring tones and loads more
o More information here:

• Psiloc Connect – Is basically the clever way to connect to the internet through your handset. Set priority connections, and get the most out of the connections you have, whether it be 3G or through WLAN
o More information here:

• We:offset – This application helps you off set the CO2 emissions of essential journeys. Basically helping you use mobile technology to do your bit for the environment.
o More information here:

I am looking forward to writing up my experiences with the N82 over the next few weeks, and I must also thank WOM World for providing me with the handset and making it all possible.
