EU ruling could change iPhone’s battery design

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The design gurus over at Cupertino might just get a huge task on their heads, if the EU goes ahead with a ruling. The European Union is currently considering a requirement according to which, all cell phones sold should have batteries that can be easily replaced. No points for guessing which phone lacks this ability.

If EU does go ahead with this ruling, it might mean serious trouble for the iPhone 3G. Today, the slim streamlined design of the iPhone is one of its most talked about feature and many a times, acts as its sole USP. Apple will have to make some mighty design changes to the phone, and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that it might not be as it is today.

According to the policy, (via AppleInsider and New Electronics), the latest set of computer-industry regulations under consideration in Europe may require every phone manufacturer to make sure that replacing batteries inĀ  their phones is as easy as sliding off a cover or removing a couple of screws, none of which is possible with the iPhone 3G.

There might be some good news for Apple though. As per the report, the directive is very vaguely worded at present and the idea behind the directive is to make sure that batteries don’t end up in landfills. If Apple somehow convinces the EU that it’s battery replacement program is far away from that, it could just win itself a sigh of relief.

We’ll keep an eye on anything that comes our way on this.

The iPhone 3G battery is shit

My iPhone 3G is behaving like a total dog when it comes to battery power.

I got on the train at 10:11am with full battery, right?

I switched on the mp3 player, I checked some email, I arsed about on Facebook, I located myself a few times, blah de blah. I generally ‘used’ the device for the duration of the 35 minute train ride.

I was down about 10% of the battery power by the end of the journey.

By midday with on-and-off usage, checking email regularly and whatnot, I had just 20% left.

Useless, absolutely USELESS.

You don’t get that with an N95 8GB.

Still, the iPhone 3G is a beautiful device and I do like the applications.

Perhaps my iPhone 3G’s Exchange is draining the battery?

iPhone exchange

I’m wondering if one of the primary reasons that my iPhone 3G is draining it’s battery at a shocking rate whenever it’s unplugged is due to the Exchange integration?

I was delighted when I was able to configure my device with my calendar, contacts and whatnot. It just sucked down all my data and whenever I add a contact or calendar entry on my desktop — woosh — it appears nigh-on immediately on my iPhone.

But that must account for some kind of overhead, right? It’s apparently ‘pushing’ to the device. I’m thinking of changing it to ‘pull’ (although I’m not quite clear on how I actually ‘pull’ data down. Maybe a ’sync’ button appears?).

We shall see. Has anyone else been using Exchange on their iPhone whilst the battery drains before their eyes?
