MobileWorldCongressWatch: Sony Ericsson launches W995 + new 12.1 camera phone - UPDATED

Sunday, February 15th, 2009

At the very first of many press conferences at Mobile World Congress ‘09, Sony Ericsson launched their newest of the new handsets - the W995.

SE W995 is heralded in as a slider formatted phone, with an 8.1megapixel camera as 8MP is just so last year.

The Walkman phone comes with a 2.6-inch screen, stereo speakers and all the gloriousness of most of their walkman-esque type phones with almost no surprises.

We say almost no surprises, as they’ve also launched PlayNow Movies. A service which trumps the likes of Nokia’s Comes With Music, as it allows movies to be purchased and downloaded via the ‘puter. Hurrah!

The Sony Ericsson W955 is apparently optimised for video playback making it less of a Walkman and more of a Runmen.

Accompanying the phone and for the very first time, is their Media Go. This appears to be client and phone based software for the ease of playing, transferring and organising media on the phone. We’re not saying this is an iTunes clone, but it is coming off sounding a lot like one of those very items.

It even appears, at this stage, to have an encoder on board for converting the right video in whatever format for the handset. There’s even talk of automatically and correctly formatting this media, with almost no user interaction. Hurrah!

Just to add that little bit extra level of service and quality, they’ve bundled in the HPM-77 premium headphones. According to Sony Ericsson these make you “feel like you’re sitting in a recording studio listening to your favourite band live”. The proof however will be in the listening rather than taking anyone else’s word for that.

The W955 is capable of picture capture in an A3 format, from its 8.1megapixel camera without any compromising in quality or so we’ve been informed.

With the likes of WiFI, Quad band EDGE, 3G and aGPS with a bundled in 8GB Memory Stick it’s coming off looking like that best Walkman handset they’ve delivered. Although seeing as they do deliver one every few weeks it appears these days, it’s not really saying much.

Sony Ericsson also briefly utter rumblings at the event of the 3.5-inch screen codenamed ‘ Idou ‘, which is a 12.1 megapixel wonderment scheduled for released around the second half of this year. Marvellous!

Ringo Starr too busy for autographs; what about camera phone pictures?

Monday, October 13th, 2008

If you’re a famous popstar, you got there because people bought your concert tickets, albums, DVDs, the whole shebang.

So when they approach you in the street for an autograph, well… isn’t that the fame deal? You walk about will millions of quid in your pocket ergo, when ‘the fans’ want something — an autography (or, more likely, a camera phone photo), unless you’ve got a damn good excuse, you play the game. You smile, you pose and you rush home to your mega mansion.

It’s a two way street.

You only ever got there because thousands or millions bought into you and stumped up the cash, one way or another.

You’re not there through the gift of the gods. It’s an industry. And you play the game.

Unless of course, you’re an ancient Beatle, by the name of Ringo Starr. He’s had enough. Enough of signing stuff. Enough messages from fans. One can only assume that he simply can’t be bothered now. I shit you not.

I had to look him up to check he was, actually, a Beatle. I’m not that into their music (with the odd exception - I used to sing Yellow Submarine with all my classmates during music lessons. Annoying.)

I kid ye not. Ringo Starr says peace’n'luv and no thanks to any fan mail.

He won’t sign stuff. He’s far too busy. There’s what looks like an arbitrary date — October 20th — as a deadline. Anything sent to him after that date (I’m not sure if this is ‘inclusive’) will be disposed off.

Heh.

Fascinating.

He made a brilliant quote that I saw in his video message (and replicated in the BBC story):

“I’m warning you with peace and love I have too much to do,” the 68-year-old drummer said.

Peace and love. But your stuff is going in the bin. Heh.

I wonder if the connected generation is just too much for Ringo. The fact that anyone can look up his fan mail address and click-click-click send him a message must be quite different from back in the 60s.

The instant nature of today’s society — particularly with the legions of camera phone owners roaming around — must play havoc with the elder celebrity generation.

So if you happen to see Ringo somewhere, check the date. If it’s October 21st+ then you can be more or less assured he ain’t playing. Photos from afar only, I suspect.

You can watch the hilarious video announcing this (”Peace and Love”), here.

Peace’n'luv from Mobile Industry Review.

Samsung’s 8mp, 16gig camera phone

Monday, July 21st, 2008

Samsung, it would seem, is about to join Sony and produce an 8mp camera phone. News is abound on every site from Pocket Lint to i4u. And I for one cannot wait to get my hands on the device.

If Samsung has designed it well and kept the optical zoom function then the phone picture should actually be quite good. If not then the focus will be off and you’ll only be able to get pictures that, whilst having exceptional resolution, will in actual fact do nothing more than sit in the phone’s memory and only get displayed on a screen that is only capable of displaying 76800pixels (320×240).

The leaked pictures, show it has auto focus and a Xenon flash but it doesn’t look like an optical zoom is included. Shame.

LG and Motorola are also thought to be producing 8mp camera phones.

Because it’s only the pictures that have been leaked very little further information is known. The DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) logo is present so it should have great connectivity The GPS and DivX logos also suggest that this could be an exceptional phone to have.

The Register also suggests:

The phone will support HSDPA 3G connections and Wi-Fi, whilst offering users the option of either 8GB or 16GB of internal storage. The report also claims the phone has an integrated 3D chip to ensure smooth support for 3D games.

Samsung’s i8510 is thought to measure roughly 106 x 53 x 16mm and come in a metal casing. Because the phone hasn’t been officially announced yet, a UK release date or price is still unknown.
