Nokia’s Virtual Music Launch

Monday, March 9th, 2009

nokia_11_march

A mysterious, puzzling, thought provoking, email arrived today from Nokia’s press office.

An email which included the invite to ‘The Nokia Virtual Music launch’ this coming Wednesday, with no more details than what’s provided below, word for word.

Nokia would like to cordially invite you to the Nokia Virtual Music launch event which is taking place at 10:00 CET on Wednesday 11th March.

We would love you to join us to find out more about the event and catch the latest in the world of mobile music.

We hope you can make it.

What this could all be about is anyone’s guess, at the moment.

So far, the ideas speculated around is this will be their announcement of DRM free Comes With Music, coming off the back of iTunes similar news from Mac World earlier on this year.

Perhaps a new handset, with the music service bundled in is being unveiled to the world, virtually.

It’s unclear why they didn’t make this announcement at Mobile World Congress this year, with all the world’s media clearly being focused on the mobile telephone market along with the event being an ideal forum for this type of news.

We’ll just have to wait and see, but stay tuned and no doubt we’ll bring you the details.

Nokia’s Comes With Music goes on the road

The Finish Fone makers all you can eat music download service has just expanded its buffet table, to seat other countries that weren’t previously allowed at the table.

In a very tentatively  linked intro that no doubt you’ll forgive us for one day, Nokia has opened up its music store to include other countries tracks rather than just English singing artists.

Local dialects that are now featured range from France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Norway and of course Finland. More are undoubtedly to be scheduled within time, as they’ve missed a few places off that list that they are in, and are doing rather well in too.

Later on in this quarter of the year, Singapore and Australia performers will be available within Nokia’s download store. With the latter really being English speaking and singing, so forgive us once again for our discretions before you start writing in saying Australians sing in English as well.

Hitting all the right notes, they’ve started to gain even more ground against iTunes with this new pan European licensing agreement that’s bound to be a right kick in the Apples.

What’s next on this list we believe is for the service to be included out of the box on more and more handsets. With a view to making it backwardly available whenever they refresh a SKU or a series. Only the other week we brought you news of the N96 now starting off this trend, so it’s not too far a stretch of the imagination for this to be on the cards for the future.

We also put it to Nokia in an almost open letter at the end of that piece, the store “needs to be expanded to accommodate TV episodes and movies“. Over lunch the other day with some senior people at Nokia this was mentioned in conversation, where it was said there’s a reason for Nokia opening up an office in Hollywood a while ago.

So, you’ve read it here first folks. Nokia’s next venture is entitled ‘Comes With Video’, or it’s bound to be something quite close to that *cough*

Nokia pipes in the Tube’s UK arrival

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The Helsinki handset manufacture has just brought joy to the UK, by announcing the 5800 will be on sale in Blighty in just two weeks.

Coming to the Nokia Regent Street store and curiously their Heathrow Terminal 5 shop will be the phone on January the 23rd at 10am. For the princely sum of £249, SIM free.

The online store will have it too, with pre-ordering already opened. This is despite their website currently showing it will be available from February, don’t believe everything you read *cough*

A week later on the 30th, the mobile will also be available on the networks: Vodafone, O2, Orange, T-Mobile UK, Virgin Mobile. With other stockists such as Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4U retailing them as well.

Just showing that Nokia can stand on their own two feet from time to time, without the need to launch a phone with the backing of a mighty network – as it’ll be initially launched unlocked.

At the end of November we brought you news the Nokia 5800 had already begun shipping, only not to the UK. At that point it had just started its delivery run to far flung places such as Russia, Hong Kong and Taiwan. As we were told the first batch had the styluses housed inside the mobile, as it’s so vital and needs to be ever present for the character input in those countries. In the UK and possibly elsewhere in this run, the stylus has just been included within the box.

Just to refresh your memory, the 5800 XpressMusic is bundled with 8GB of memory and can cope with 6,000 tracks, with most of the common digital music formats supported. It has a 3.2-inch touch screen display boasting 640 x 360 pixels, with a 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera lens.

No word as yet if this Comes With Music, nor can we find any notes surrounding if it does or if there’s a precedence already been set elsewhere in the world.

Either way it’s a good little handset and goes someway to counter Sony Ericsson’s Walkman brand of phones, which we’re sure is what Nokia is going for here.

Nokia N96 now comes with music

The Finnish phone maker’s flagship N96 phone has just had a musical make over, with a bolt on in the form of the Comes With Music edition.

It’s available through London’s Regent Street Nokia store from next week, or right now from the online store here at the princely sum for £540 SIM free.

Besides having BBC iPlayer access and the features Ovi brings, it can now have the free unlimited music downloads from the Nokia Music Store. A store that has a very rich collection of over 3 million tracks to chose from, keep and play to your ears content – with more appearing on the horizon.

Nokia’s normal N96 runs it at £480 as compared to the CWM version. For that £60 premium you have to balance it up if it’s worthwhile in terms of the musical content, as nothing else extra is added. We would have thought they’d have thrown in an 8GB microSD card, but sadly no. Although all the tracks are actually legal, and the artists are being paid for their work so there’s the goodwill feel good factor.

The music service is already on their 5310 XpressMusic handset and N95 8GB, along with the soon to be seen 5800 due for shipping. With the likelihood of more phones in the future having the Comes With Music service added all being very high indeed, if this is successful.

Surely Apple must be quaking in their little white shoes by now, as the risk to iTunes must be mighty. All that it needs is for the store to be expanded to accommodate TV episodes and Movies for them to be running for the hills screaming ‘run away, run away’.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic begins its delivery run

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Heading in to next week’s Nokia World in Barcelona, the former Wellington boot manufacture has just made public they’ll soon be shipping the 5800 XpressMusic to parts of the world.

They’re making head way to Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Finland first of all with the rest to follow suit. Although not shipping to all as yet, it’s still a good start.

A spokesperson at Nokia’s press office has confirmed to us the due date for Blighty hasn’t been set in stone yet, but expect it to arrive early 2009.

With the 5800 XpressMusic coming along with 8GB of memory for 6,000 tracks, plus support for the most common digital music formats around they’re looking to take it to Apple.

Coupling that with the 3.2-inch touch screen, they might as well have called it the Nokia iPhone. Especially seeing as it has 16:9 format, 30 fps playback, and VGA quality video recording via the 3.2 megapixel Carl Zeiss camera lens.

Its MediaBar seems to be a useful addition, giving quick access to the handsets music, video and photos whilst also providing instant access to the ‘net.

Let’s not forget the phone arrives with Nokia’s Comes With Music, offering up free unlimited music download for a year. Not a bad offer we think, imagine how much money Apple would lose if they did that with their iTunes store.

Expect to see the Series 60 5th edition phone wherever you are soon

Nokia Comes With Music: Targeting University Students

Friday, November 7th, 2008

It is always interesting to see how companies try and promote their services and engage with their target market.

First up is Nokia’s Comes With Music, previously we have had a lot of coverage here on MIR however this post is written in the position as head of sales and promotions at my student radio station and nothing to do with my writings here on MIR.

I was called up today from what I presume to be street teams for Nokia something (I can’t remember the name she told of her team).  It seems Nokia have tasked students to get the word out about with Comes With Music as much as possible. She said she was looking for people who could speak to the most about students as possible and obviously student radio is one possible medium hence why she was ringing me.

She told me that she had a few Comes With Music phones to giveaway as prizes. She took my details down and my interest and she had to speak to her boss.

I find out early next week whether we have been successful however it is fantastic to see companies really engaging with the their target audience.

More coverage on this next week!

Good Job Nokia!

Nokia’s new Benches ‘Come with Music’

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

In an effort to promote its highly touted ‘Comes with Music‘ service, Nokia, the leading handset manufacturer has now started placing special benches at various public places in the UK.

Now, before you start wondering what’s with Nokia and the Benches, let me elaborate. The benches are actually a clever advertising medium to promote their ‘Comes with Music’ service here in the UK. These benches are fitted with Nokia’s handsets and headphones into the armrests. These handsets will be pre-loaded with music, depending on the the region where they are located. For example, Liverpool may get The Beatles while Birmingham might just get Black Sabbath.

DId someone say vandals? Nokia is staying one step ahead here, by placing a security guard at every location. There will also be a live performer and different appearances will be made each day until Christmas.

More details on Comes With Music

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

There’s been quite a lot of ‘how-are-they-going-to-do-that’ speculation on Nokia’s Comes With Music announcements recently.

Here’s a little more detail from a recent release I got from Carphone Warehouse:

The Carphone Warehouse has announced that it will be offering the ground-breaking Nokia Comes With Music service exclusively on Pay As You Go, with a range of Nokia 5310 XpressMusic handsets this autumn. This unique service is set to revolutionise the music industry, allowing music lovers nationwide a year’s free unlimited access to millions of tracks from the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue. Songs from a range of great artists – past, present and future – will be offered to subscribers for a one-off cost and to make the service even more attractive, the downloaded tracks can be kept on the users handset or PC forever – for no additional fee.

So I imagine Michael Jackson will be available. But new bands, probably not. Independent bands? probably not. We’ll need to see. It’s gotta just be big major labels, right?

Ahh here’s that answer:

A collaboration with Warner Music, Universal Music Group International and Sony BMG Entertainment will give consumers instant access to a diverse array of international artists’ material, from Iron Maiden to Hot Chip. This exceptional offering enables users to access over two million tracks from the extensive Nokia Music Store catalogue. Songs can be simply downloaded to either a PC or mobile phone, meaning music lovers nationwide will never be stuck without something new to listen to.

And at the end of the year, what happens to all my tracks?

Once the year is complete, customers can keep all of their music, without having to worry about it disappearing when their subscription is over. There are also a number of attractive options to continue downloading new music: users will be able to continue to purchase additional tracks from the Nokia Music Store or upgrade to a new Nokia Comes With Music device and continue to add to their music collection from the Comes with Music online catalogue.

Now it’ll be rather smart if you can simply take your songs with you to a new device. If it’s seamless and entirely pain free… it could be rather good.

We shall see.
