Windows Live Mobile gets a makeover

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

A blog posting has just appeared from the Windows Live Mobile Team uttering there are new happenings to its mobile phone portal. Wahoo!

They’ve updated their Windows Live site for mobiles with all new features and services that weren’t even around for the beta users, those cheeky wee people.

Aim your phone at http://mobile.live.com to check out what’s what and run up your data tariff so much that you’ll have to sell a family member just to pay the bill off.

They’ve updated, reworked, and tweaked Windows Live Mobile Home to now include Photos, Profiles, People, and Spaces – all with nothing to actually download to your phone.

Services match and mirror what goes on in the full blown version too. With the likes of your personal status messages being updated on the mobile client then changing on the desktop.

Before hand really only very basic Hotmail and Messenger were available for handset users, now they’ve almost enabled the familiar desktop functions for your phone. There’s even a promise of an updated mobile Hotmail version on the way in the next few months. Hurrah!

They’ve released two updated version, one for the PC and another for the phone. With a view to learn what you can actually do on you mobile, with the likes of Alerts and SMS services on the ‘puter.

On the computer, aim your browsers to the exact same address – http://mobile.live.com, to find out what’s what.

For more on the blog-post see here, or just go and visit the mobile site and try it out for yourself.

NokiaWorldWatch: Ovi gets the message, better integration with others

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

From their 14th Nokia World event comes the announcement of Ovi messaging now supporting more email and IM clients than ever before. Hurrah!

They’ve finally got the message, received the signal, opened the missive – you get where we’re going with this – with the inclusion of the most frequently used mailing and messaging solutions around.

Over are the dark days where two polystyrene cups and a length of string is the best way to keep in contact with Nokia handsets.

Now they’ve listened to their people, taken heed at the requests and have brought to them a more solid foundation for messaging.

This new Ovi update surrounds getting email and messaging on their handsets, under the title ‘Nokia Messaging’.

Where there’s now integration with said platform for Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Windows Live Hotmail and AOL mail to name but a few.

On top of that, as if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also introduced the inclusion of their IM counterparts
too. With the expected suspects of Google Talk and Yahoo! Messenger now all onboard.

There’s support too from what Nokia are quoting as thousands of ISPs around the world. We expect all of the above comes from the purchase of Oz communications a few months back. Who had a solid foundation in all of this and it just seems natural it’s now a part of Nokia

All this is accessible from their new online portal for Mail on Ovi with its now 1GB storage ceiling, offering up a single sign-in to accessing and creating Ovi email accounts.

Arriving globally this month in 12 languages, the beta is set to take on Series 40 devices first with others being around the corner. Although the web version sadly won’t be around until February 2009.

As for their Nokia Messaging platform, it’ll be launched first quarter of next year. With owners of N71 and N95 first having access to a trial of their push email services here from today.

This has been designed to support easy access and set up for mobile email, for better integration all their accounts. From how it was outlaid to us, it’s a simple process with no trauma at all.

In a reverse take on the new offering Ovi, this will be available for S60 devices with Series 40 coming along in the second half of 2009.

This does all seem to be gearing towards offering up Blackberry-esque services to all, without the premium on top.

iPhone gets a new hard casing, whilst increasing battery life by a factor of two

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008

Apple accessory company Incase has just announced a new extended battery for the 3G Apple iPhone, doubling its longevity whilst providing a USB port too.

Arriving at the end of the month, the Power Slider will also be available from the Apple store online at just $99.95.

Only a few weeks back we brought you news of the FastMac iV that extends iPhone talk time by a factor of three. Although only doubling the battery life, the Power Slider does look a lot neater than the iV, fitting in more with its initial look.

The case’s built in battery is chargeable by a normal USB that doubles up as the data port. No more carrying around dire bespoke cables. Hurrah!

Seeing as the iPhone battery’s life isn’t the best in the world, this looks like a must for all Apple phone users. Thinking ahead, it could even be an ideal gift for Christmas, as those shopping weeks are running out fast.

It’s all based around a 1330mAh lithium-ion polymer battery, which looks to be of a very slim design. It works with the iPhone by first using the Power Slider’s battery until fully depleted, before hitting on the internal battery of the actual handset.

This keeps the phone fully charged at all times and can be removed from the Slider at anytime too. Whilst at the same time providing a hard outer casing to the phone, which rivals its own durability *cough*

Overall the Power Slider provides 330hrs of standby, 5 hrs of talk time, 26hrs of audio playback, 7hrs of video playback and 5hrs of internet usage with 6 over WIFI. This is exactly double of what the iPhone offers by default, how wonderful.

Android ‘reboot’ command gets a fix

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Just in case there weren’t enough reasons to stay clear of the G1, it appears there’s an issue with security and root level access to the Linux kernel.

Rumour mill has hit overdrive of late, with an issue over privileged access to the operating system’s core being exposed.

Google has put out a fix for this issue, along with another that’s worried customers.

It’s come to light that users were given top-level administrator privileges automatically on their G1, where any text entered could be read by Android as a system command.

It just gets funnier and funnier.

This issue was apparently picked up when a random user entered in the word ‘reboot’ into an SMS, where the phone promptly acted by shutting down and then restarting.

If anyone out there can corroborate this, it would be of interest.

Another issue came to light of late *sigh* over the browser’s weakness, where some websites that have been deliberately built around damaging code could take over control of the browser.

Both of these have been resolved with the latest updates and really only affected early shipping code, which are most all of the handsets so we’ve heard.

It is reassuring to know that besides man being fallible, Google is too.

Opera Mini 4.2 gets theatrical debut

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

The latest mobile device browser from Opera just got a new voice, in the form of 4.2 beta released today.

Apparently, so claim Opera and who are we to disbelieve them, Opera Mini has now more than 20 million unique downloads per month. Obviously today’s launch will just crank up that figure to astronomic proportions – as if 240,000,000 a year isn’t enough.

They’ve created a bit of a song and dance over this preview with more customised new skins, and better support for mobile video services such as YouTube.

Other improvements relate to Opera Link, which allows phone users to share notes, bookmarks, and browsing history between their mobile phones and their PCs.

Opera has also upped the browsing and loading performance by introducing a new server in the US of A. This is coupled with reducing the load on servers elsewhere in the world, therefore making it faster everywhere else too. Isn’t that just wonderful.

They believe they’ve seen an average growth of 10% in users of Opera Mini every month on a global basis. As their browser just keeps on improving in speed and functionality, Opera expects Mini’s popularity to just keep growing. Hurrah!

It’s around now to download in a standard version in both JAR and JAD formats, and is also around for BlackBerrys and Palms too.

Opera Mini 4.2 beta is a free download from www.operamini.com/beta/ – enjoy.

Orange exclusively gets flipped

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

The wonderful world of flip phones gets a brother from another mother; this time around Orange gets an exclusive with the LG KF 300.

Only last week the new BlackBerry flip/clamshell phone was announced on O2 and not to be outdone Orange has shown off the new edition to their range.

Pitching up looking awfully similar to the Motorola RAZR, the LG LF300 comes in weighting just 97g and is only 16.2mm thick.

LG has strangely come out boasting the handset “incorporates a hidden sub-LCD screen”, very much akin to what the RAZR already has on the outside of its case only we don’t hear a song and dance from them.

Onboard the Lucky Goldstar phone has the expected 2.2-inch screen with stereo Bluetooth, an MP3 player, FM radio, 2MP camera and 14MB of inbuilt memory, possibly expandable to 2GB from the microSD slot.

They believe it has an extra large keypad, we’re guessing for simple typing without the need or use of a magnifying glass.

All very decidedly common place today it rocks up with tri-band GSM and Edge, with a talk time of 2 hours and standby life of around 8 days.

It’s available now from the Orange website, on a 24 month contract from £15 per month or there’s always the RAZR.

SMS GupShup, India’s Twitter, gets $11m funding

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Credit crunch? What credit crunch?

SMSGupShup, India’s equivalent of Twitter, has just taken $11m from Helion Ventures and Charles River Ventures, to help grow and develop the business (reports Silicon India).

This good news for the SMSGupShup team and for the mobile industry as a whole. The growth of mobile in the emerging markets is simply staggering. The intent with GupShup is to capitalise on contextual mobile advertising demand.

We’ll keep an eye on them. Meanwhile, congratulations to the company’s co-founders Rakesh Mathur and Beerud Sheth.
