Gmail lets you put your current location on your email footer

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

So this is a rather nifty addition, isn’t it? If you’re like to really wind up the people you’re emailing (or, hugely annoy your boss), you can have Google automatically do a lookup on your current IP location and stick that in your footer.

It’s only for Gmail at the moment. That’s Gmail on the desktop. I doubt it works for mobile… although that would be an interesting experiment to try out.

Although I wonder at what point will it become highly unnecessary for anyone to actually tell you where they are. You’ll just know. It’ll be built straight into your mobile messaging console in the future. Right?

Sort of.

Maybe in about 100 years…

Gmail on Android looks shit-hot

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I’m particularly excited about getting proper hands-on with the T-Mobile G1 to look at it’s email functionality. I didn’t get much of a chance to check out the functionality in-depth during the T-Mobile launch party as we were filming the whole time (see the results here).

I wondered how business-critical the Gmail functionality will be. I get a lot of email and trying to manage it on-the-go is a challenge — somewhat eased by the fact I’ve managed to get by Blackberry Curve to reconcile properly with my two key Google Apps accounts.

Check out this video from the Google team (and the post here) — it gives a super overview about the capabilities of the Gmail app on the operating system. I’m assuming that you can get the same facilities with a Google Apps account (this is usually the case):

Looks good.

I won’t pronounce it business-critical until I’ve got my hands on it. I do like the fact you can search your inbox — I TRUST that this means you can search your online account, rather than the messages in your inbox.

I like the contact synchronisation. Finally. That over-the-air contact sync with Google. FINALLY.

It’s looking promising…

Gmail for Mobile goes 2.0

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Not too long after the Google Maps for Mobile team announced an update for their My Location feature, the Gmail for mobile team have announced the next big version of the mobile app, version 2.0

Making the jump from 1.5.x to 2.0, a lot of exciting new features have been introduced with this release. On of the most annoying things about the app was the time when there was no signal. As per the team, their focus for this version was to make the whole experience faster and more reliable at the same time. Here’s what version 2.0 brings.

  • Improved Performance: There’s a notable speed improvement and absolutely no lag while scrolling.
  • Multiple Account Management: The new version lets your manage multiple Gmail or Google Apps account, allowing you to quickly switch between them. No more running two apps for Gmail and Google Apps.
  • More Shortcut Keys: The new release adds more power to QWERTY phones, by adding even more shortcut keys for scrolling, undo, new and old conversation etc.
  • Offline Support: At times when there’s no or bad signal, the app allows you to compose a new message or read through your most emails. Outgoing messages are saved to the Outbox and sent out automatically.
  • Multiple Drafts: The new version can also store multiple drafts on the phone.
  • Additional Region Support: The version 2.0 is now available in over 35 languages.

As usual, the latest version is available for download at http://m.google.com/mail

The team has also posted a fun video run-through of the new features.
