Windows Live Mobile gets a makeover

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

A blog posting has just appeared from the Windows Live Mobile Team uttering there are new happenings to its mobile phone portal. Wahoo!

They’ve updated their Windows Live site for mobiles with all new features and services that weren’t even around for the beta users, those cheeky wee people.

Aim your phone at http://mobile.live.com to check out what’s what and run up your data tariff so much that you’ll have to sell a family member just to pay the bill off.

They’ve updated, reworked, and tweaked Windows Live Mobile Home to now include Photos, Profiles, People, and Spaces – all with nothing to actually download to your phone.

Services match and mirror what goes on in the full blown version too. With the likes of your personal status messages being updated on the mobile client then changing on the desktop.

Before hand really only very basic Hotmail and Messenger were available for handset users, now they’ve almost enabled the familiar desktop functions for your phone. There’s even a promise of an updated mobile Hotmail version on the way in the next few months. Hurrah!

They’ve released two updated version, one for the PC and another for the phone. With a view to learn what you can actually do on you mobile, with the likes of Alerts and SMS services on the ‘puter.

On the computer, aim your browsers to the exact same address – http://mobile.live.com, to find out what’s what.

For more on the blog-post see here, or just go and visit the mobile site and try it out for yourself.

We’re Live from MoMo London

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Here’s the live segment we filmed at MoMo London & Swedish Beers on Monday:

We’re LIVE at MoMo London & Swedish Beers tonight

Monday, November 10th, 2008

We’re off to the CBI at Centrepoint in the middle of London to a rather extraordinary MoMo London/Swedish Beers.

Swedish Beers, the networking event, is 7 years old.

MoMo London (Mobile Monday London) is 3 years old.

And they’re having a joint-birthday celebration.

And we’re doing our first ever MIR Show LIVE tonight.

The chaps are excited. Dan is wearing his pearls. James will be sporting his shades, and I’m pretty sure Ben will be wearing one of his sharp suits.

Tonight’s event is a chat show featuring industry luminaries such as Mike Short of o2, Russell Buckley of AdMob and Bill Thompson from the BBC’s Digital Planet. They’re going to be managed — or hosted — by Tim Green, Editor of Mobile Entertainment Magazine. And in the middle — slap bang in the middle — we’re going to be filming a live segment on stage.

We’re also on the hunt for interesting mobile related stuff and I’m going to get James to do a Normob walkabout, so if you’d like to get on camera, look for us and say hi…

O2’s deal with LiveNation/AMG shows they’re serious about live music

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

“It’s all very well for folk in London”, I thought, as I walked through the O2 Dome the other day, “But if you’re sat in Hartlepool, there’s not much value to be got from being an O2 customer.”

The multi-year sponsorship of the Millenium Dome is rather nifty. Renamed ‘the O2′, you can get priority tickets to some rather huge gigs if you’re an O2 customer. Reasonably cool. But irrelevant if you live elsewhere around the UK.

Until today, that is.

O2 have done a deal with LiveNation/AMG. From the 1st of January next year, AMG’s venues are to be renamed. So what was once known as ‘The Brixton Academy’ will now be known as ‘the O2 Academy Brixton’.

O2 customers will gain priority access to tickets to all gigs at the venues, as well as other Live Nation events across the country. In total, O2 customers will gain special access to as many as 4,000 Live Nation produced shows a year in the UK up to 48 hours before they go on general sale.

That is set to be a persuasive pitch for those for whom live music is an absolute must. Me? I’m never that impressed standing at the back surrounded by drunk Coldplay fans. But if you’re one of those Coldplay fans desperate to get a ticket before everyone else does, would you change your network operator to o2? Quite possibly.

Here are the new O2 Academy venues:

O2 Academy Brixton
02 Academy Islington
O2 Academy Birmingham
O2 Academy Bristol
O2 Academy Glasgow
O2 Academy Liverpool
O2 Academy Newcastle
O2 Academy Oxford
O2 Academy Sheffield
O2 Academy Leeds
O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire

This is what swings it for me though: Fast track entry. I’d use my O2 iPhone account for that. Definitely.

This is also quite an interesting point:

O2 will work closely with Live Nation/AMG to enhance the concert going experience, developing technologies like mobile ticketing which is both convenient and environmentally friendly, and utilize the venues to assess the benefits of contact-less NFC (Near Field Communication) technology in the music industry.

Interesting, interesting…

WalkingHotspot now live and ready to use

Monday, September 8th, 2008

I’m pleased to see that WalkingHotSpot is now live. It was back in April that I used the beta version of WalkingHotSpot to post a few blogs using my mobile data connection and my laptop.

I really like the utility of being able to get a WiFi connection from my handset — wherever I am (and as long as I have mobile reception). It’s like carrying a penknife. Or a second laptop battery. Or a backup USB broadband stick. Reassurance.

You know when you absolutely positively have to get an internet connection to your laptop and the WiFi in Starbucks isn’t working? This is when you want a facility like this.

Provided you’ve got a fairly decent Nokia with WiFi capabilities — or some HTC devices — you’ll be able to use it.

If you haven’t tried it out, it’s worth playing with. You can get a 7 day free trial or buy a month’s usage from WalkingHotSpot for just $6.99. Or a yearly ‘pass’ for $24.99. Although be clear — you need to have a mobile data plan of sorts on your account as well.

Sign-up here.

By the way, do check-out their chief competitor, JoikuSpot — Ben did a review of them recently.

QIK launch live streaming video for iPhone

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

You’ll need a jailbroken iPhone to play, but if you’d like to be amongst the very first to check out QIK’s iPhone 3G live streaming video service, this is the page you need: http://qik.com/sign_up.

Here’s Michael from QIK introducing it and demonstrating it:

It works with jailbroken iPhone and iPhone 3G running 2.0 of the software. More details here.

From Michael’s video demonstration, the implementation looks fantastic. Really, really smart stuff from the QIK guys.
