O2 rings in the New Year with 166 million SMSs

o2

Telefónica O2 in the UK just announced on the New Year, 1,900 text messages were sent every second.

Over a 24 hours period, 166 million SMSs were sent, with their records ending on 7:30 January 1st. No news if this has set a new record and no one was on hand from O2 to deny or confirm this. Unfortunately no other UK carrier has made public yet their stats producing a more rounded figure.

Just to put this in comparison elsewhere on the planet we went a search’in, where stats came in of a similar nature showing text messages are now preferable to actually calling someone on NYE.

In Sweden over 24 million messages were sent during New Years Eve, over the state owned network Telia. Their other main carrier Tele2, showed a number almost reaching 28.4 million – this hit a new record for that country.

The Netherlands Vodafone division had an increase of 52 percent from last year, with their figures for text messaging coming in at 22 million over that night. T-Mobile, the other largest faction recorded a third increase on the previous year’s takings, with 19 million SMSs being sent.

More closer to home, Orange in France clocked up 66 million in just four hours from 9pm to 2am.
The other major network in France SFR hit 18.1 million SMSs, up 36 percent on last year.

Whilst Bouygues Telecom saw between midnight and 1am 15 million text messages, on a 100 percent increase from the year before.

In Belgium 78.3 million text messages were sent to the Belgian network, where only the year before just 59.3 million SMSs were sent.

In Switzerland they saw 54.5 million text messages sent over all their networks. 25 million SMSs went across the Swisscom carrier until midnight, with their Orange network seeing 13.6 million.

Thailand hit the 50 million SMS mark, and surprisingly one million MMS were transmitted from December 31 2008 to January 1 2009.

All told, text messaging seems a hit this year and rightly so. Why spend the next hour at midnight calling people to wish them a happy new year, whilst going straight to voicemail each time as everyone else has the same idea.

Instead, fire off a few dozen SMSs and hope everyone does the same thing. Or in the case of Thailand, take a picture of yourself wishing people a happy new year (?) and send that instead.

Happy New Year

6.9 million iPhones sold in Q4 2008

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Apple’s Q4 Conference Call announcement brought us some astonishing iPhone news today. While the company posted a profit of $1.14 billion on revenues of $7.9 billion for the quarter, their sales figures for their devices were off the roofs. In the Q4 of 2008, Apple managed to sell 6,892,000 iPhone 3Gs compared to the 1,119,000 iPhones in Q4 of 2007. With this, the company has already surpassed its goal of 10 million iPhones in 2008, with a good 3 months in advance.

These sales figures have now ranked Apple as the world’s third largest mobile phone supplier in terms of revenue. In fact, Apple sold more iPhone 3Gs than RIM’s entire BlackBerry lineup taken together. The only obvious companies holding the first two places are Nokia and Samsung respectively.

So how well a decision was the introduction of the iPhone for Apple? Even though Apple had ventured into unknown territory, the iPhone being their first mobile handset, it now contributes about 39% of the company’s total business.

India’s Mobile market added 4 new Subscribers every second in September

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

While being one of the fastest growing mobile markets in the world, it wasn’t a surprise that India, the largest democracy in the world recently surpassed the 300 million mark for the total number of mobile subscribers in the country. However, what’s even more remarkable are the stats for the month of September.

The country added almost 10 million new mobile subscribers last month, taking the total figure to 310.62 million. Now, if my maths knowledge serves me right, that’s about 4 new subscribers every single second. However, the penetration rate still lags at 27.5%, leaving out enough room for further growth.

The country’s market is large dominated by the GSM technology, contributing about 75.2% of the total subscriber base. 7.65 million new GSM subscribers were added last month while the CDMA base contributing 2.34 million.

Bharti Airtel continued to be the country’s largest cellular operator, adding 2.7 million subscribers out of the 9.9 million. Vodafone, which ranks third added 1.86 million subscribers. Airtel currently services 77.48 million subscribers in the country, while its closest rival, Reliance Communications serves about 56 million.

It would be interesting to take a look at the market share for the mobile handsets and the manufacturers that carry these new subscribers.

Apple on the way to 23 million iPhone sales?

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Guess what analysts reckon will happen to iPhone sales now there’s been a cut in the prices? Yep, you’ve guessed it, they’re going to go up. According to Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves, via Apple Insider , the $199 iPhone will mimic the growth the iPod saw when it dropped under $200.

The price change saw sales of the iPod go from 8.3 million to $32 million, says Apple Insider - so if the iPhone goes the same way, there could be 23 milion iPhones flying off the shelves, not taking into account any further subsidies from operators that could make the device even cheaper.

And how much are the devices costing Apple to make? According to iSuppli, the bill of materials is $173 per device. IT doesn’t look like Steve Jobs is going to have any trouble beating his 10 million sales goal a few times over.
