Google’s Android coming to a netbook near you soon

android-netbook

Those guys at VentureBeat have managed to install Google’s mobile phone platform on an Asus Eee PC, for proof of concept that it could be done and they wrote it all up too.

In order to possibly show how versatile the OS is, they spent just four hours compiling Android for the Eee PC 1000H to get it fully up and running.

All whilst they managed to get most of the hardware on the netbook responding, from WIFI to sound and graphics during the whole process.

The screen wasn’t an issue either, as Android automatically adapted. This is despite the Asus laptop display being around five times that of the G1 mobile phone screen.

They weren’t actually the first to start the ball rolling on this, believe it or not, Google has already had an attempt. One of their developers only recently ported the OS to a much older Asus Eee PC, the 701. This spurned these guys to do their own, only on a more current model.

VentureBeat believes if all this could be developed it might even usher in better web applications, with the likes of Google’s Chrome possibly being at the heart. They also think we might be able to see an actual Android netbook within three months. With the reliance going to the partners of Google’s OHA alliance, and others who have a say in the matter.

Linux is already big on the netbooks, as a decent cost alternative to the other common option of Windows XP. But with every flavour known to man making an appearance in one form or another, Google could quite easily standardise with Android on these devices and win the day.

With the well established industry name they have it will inspire greater confidence too as an OS choice for muggles, rather than an unknown non-common placed Linux brand.

Not to mention those who are bundling embedded mobile broadband in their netbooks, who will benefit from the synergy Android provides.

If anything, it would certainly give Microsoft something to seriously think about or even those Linux providers.

Read more on their piece here.

Pay careful attention to the policies part. As it appears Google could have set up Android for this avenue already, with a mention of mobile internet devices in the code.

Orange hitches up to the 3G netbook bandwagon, again

Saturday, November 8th, 2008

Not exactly a mobile story, but falling more into that camp that not – Orange gets shiny new ASUS EeePC with an embedded 3G SIM.

Joining many many other fine carriers, Orange has now announced another computer with internet access, provided by them.

The netbook comes along at the princely sum of £25 per month, with a 3GB data allowance on a 24 month contract. It’s also just in time for Christmas and excellent timing to list those unwantwd gifts on eBay.

They actually did launch their first EeePC, the 900, way way back in those heading days of August, now they’ve upped the ante with the 901 plus in built 3G surfing.

It’ll be available in black or pink, but sadly not Orange or even Tangerine – coincidentally the new name of Oranges spin off company for small businesses (we’re only joking).

If you weren’t already aware the EeePC 901 is powered by Intel’s tasty Atom processor, with 16GB of storage, five hours of battery life, an integrated webcam, on an 8.9-inch screen and weighs in at just 1.1kg.

Once upon a time children at Christmas use to look forward to an Orange in their stockings over the fireplace, how times have changed.

Ultra first impressions of the Vodafone Netbook

Saturday, October 4th, 2008

So after being the first to purchase one at the Vodafone Marylebone store, I have the device home. I’m typing this post on it.

The glorious Vodafone Netbook.

I went for the 25 pounds per month option giving me 1GB of data per month. I figured I could always upgrade if necessary.

Here, then, are some initial thoughts:

  • The keyboard is small. Remember the device is only, what, 9 inches across. Dell have had to move the keys around so they fit. At a push, this keyboard is usable for long periods, especially once you get used to it. I’ve made about 6 typos so far – most due to the placement of the enter key.
  • You’ve got an 8GB solid state hard disk on board… but only 3.2GB of usable free space. Windows itself takes up 1.54 GB. I imagine you can remove the various Dell and Drivers folders if the mood takes you — and reclaim a lot more space.
  • I like the partnership with box.net. There’s a little icon for a 2GB free (‘lite’) box.net account. I made take them up on that.
  • The Vodafone Connect stuff is right there on the menu. Fire it up and hit connect and you’re done. Very, very smart. I found the speed really good.
  • The keyboard is satisfying.
  • The touchpad is rather swish. I like how it feels and works.
  • It’s pretty fast. It’s not quite the 8 processor Apple Workstation I’m used to but it works nicely with Windows XP and a wee bit of patience.
  • Out of the box there was 78% battery. I can’t comment yet on battery length yet.

More soon.
