Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Betavine (which is run by Vodafone as their “open” development site) held their 2 year party last week and pre-announced their Opera Widget competition which officially opened today.

Any registered Betavine user (and it’s free to register) can enter. Widgets can be developed by teams, but entries will only be accepted from individuals, so it would be up to the, to split the winnings with the rest of their team members.

Widgets must run in Opera for Mobile 9.5 and run on Nokia 6210, Nokia N78, Nokia N95 8gb and Nokia N96 devices.

Various Betavine people and Ryan Carson (of Carsonified) will judge the competition.

iPhones like Facebook

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Mark Zuckerberg stated that 25m users are accessing Facebook via Facebook Mobile each month. The mobile user base has jumped to 15m.

The are 1.64m iPhone users accessing the site, closely followed by 1.56m Blackberry users. Another 1m come in from other sources (these are only accesses from officially sanction Facebook Mobile clients or through the mobile portal).

Opera reports that Facebook was the most accessed site through it’s Opera mini browser.

Skyfire arrives in Blighty to a blaze of glory

skyfire

Up and coming mobile phone web browser by Skyfire has just made its debut in the UK, lighting up the heavens along the way.

Said to have a PC-esque browsing experience, their newest web surfer enters its beta rollout stage over ‘ere. *cough* *about time* *cough*

Boasting decent flash comparability and faster than Opera like speeds, it comes along with support for Symbian and Windows Mobile.

All with most of the web page’s compression work done at their server end, it’s much like another mobile web browser in that respect.

They’ve already successfully rolled out their beta in the USA and Canada, with the UK version now having added customisation with the likes of the BBC and eBay.co.uk on the front page.

Just to highlight their commitment to these fair isles they’ve opened up a data centre, just to locally improve page loading times. This is something Opera has yet to do in this country, so bully for them.

We’ve also seen some footage of speed tests of late against that other browser with the results being very hot indeed. Dan also bumped into them at the Symbian Smart phone show this year; check them out on MIR Show – Week 43 – Skyfire Secrets.

Or try it at http://get.skyfire.com/ and let us know your thoughts on the matter.

Opera mini 4.2 comes to the G1 and out of beta

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

That most useful of useful mobile phone internet browsers Opera mini has become officially unveiled, and for the android OS too.

Think back to those heady days of two weeks ago, when VAT was still 17.5% and the BlackBerry Storm was just a pipe dream. Ahhhh, those fond fond memories.

We then brought you news of the latest Opera mini browser moving into beta. Those days are now long long gone.

It appears all has been fixed, all the Is have been crossed and all the Ts have been dotted – with the full working version now being ready to download for your surfing pleasure.

Besides making it 30% faster for our American cousins, they’ve also snuck out a version for T-Mobile’s G1. Those cheeky rascals; as we weren’t made aware of it way back when.

We’re unsure what issues were ironed out at the time of going to press, we did held out for details before we published but all to no avail.

If anything more becomes apparent, or how close the beta was to the final version, we’ll update this piece and let you know. But it’s probably best to uninstall the old and throw on this new Opera Mini instead.

It’s now here, ready to go – enjoy.

Opera gives Google’s Gears some support

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Good news for fans of Google Gears: Opera has decided to support Gears in its Opera 9.5 Mobile browser, meaning that users will be able to get access to all their favourite Gears apps through any phone equipped with the browser, as well as on Opera’s desktop support.

Alas, the details about Opera’s Gears support are a little on the slim side – the release is pegged as sometime later this year and there’s no technical details available right now – but it’s good to see Gears expanding beyond its previous heartland of Windows Mobile devices.

By joining up with Opera, Gears gets to dodge the operating system question entirely and open itself up to Symbian phones and the massive user base that goes with it. A release date wouldn’t go amiss – I’d be keen to find out how Gears copes with some of the lower end devices.

The 10 most popular UK mobile sites are…

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Opera has been touting its latest research into the state of the mobile web and aside from pointing out that Opera Mini is now the most used mobile browser out there, it’s been taking a look at some of the content preferences for mobile surfers.

Here’s what the report says:

Tracking the type of content across the top 100 sites visited by all Opera Mini users, we find:
• Social networking is popular worldwide and is the leading source of Web traffic for mobile devices.
• Successful sites on the Web find users on mobile phones, further underscoring the emergence of One Web.
• Consumers desire a rich Web experience regardless of the device they use to access the Web. WAP continues to diminish as more-capable Web browsers are able to display full Web content on mobile phones.
• Nearly a quarter of all traffic is headed to content portals or search engines.

While none of the conclusions are surprising in themselves, it’s interesting to note that most of traffic is users going directly to a site, rather than via their operator’s content portal. Does this mean that the operator portal is set to die off in popularity in the same way the likes of Lycos and AOL portals did as the fixed web matured?

Opera’s report has also got some useful country-by-country comparisons. Here’s the UK section:

The United Kingdom is the world leader in mobile e-mail, although that number remains small. More than 11% of traffic in Q1 was to Web-based e-mail services.
