AdMob: Payment sent!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

There is something ever so exciting about getting an AdMob Payment notification email.

We’ve had AdMob advertising on SMS Text News Mobile for quite a while and it routinely generates maybe $70-$80 a month. Certainly not enough to fund an Unlimited Drinks event in London, but you know, it works, this mobile advertising thing.

If you’re one of the mobile readers clicking now and again on little adverts that appeal, good-on-ya. I have to confess I’ve clicked once or twice. Not, I hasten to add, in a bid to drive up revenue. Not at all. More out of curiosity because the advertising is actually working on me.

I particularly like to see ads that are targeted to the browser or mobile handset that I’m using at the time, (e.g. “Get ringtones and themes for your iPhone/Nokia”). I’ve been a customer of that service a few times as a result.

Mobile phones could save airlines $600m

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The airline industry could save over $600 million within the next few years if it learns how to exploit the new features in high end mobiles. According to airline IT company SITA, mobiles’ location awareness could be used to track passengers within airports and send messages to their phones to help them get to their gate on time, cutting flight delays and saving millions.

Mobile phones could also become “personal travel folders”, says SITA, holding a passenger’s boarding passes, baggage tracking information and payment data and maybe even visa and biometric information.

It’ll be interesting to see how the airline industry balances privacy and convenience in the next few years. It’s easy to see passengers embracing mobile ticketing, even the tracking scenarios, but storing biometric data on their phone? I’m not so sure. After all, people have railed against such details being stored on passports and by the government, I’m not convinced they’d be willing to put such details in the hands of a commercial organisation for a few seconds shaved off check-in.

Obopay lands $20m for mobile payments

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Mobile payments company Obopay has nabbed a four round of funding worth $20 million from the likes of Essar Communications Holdings Limited, leading the round and existing investors including Citi, Societe Generale, Qualcomm, and Promethean and new investors like Olayan America Corporation also joined in.

The company is mainly a North American-based venture – it lists Verizon Wireless and Helio among its partners – and its mobile money transfer system works with US bank accounts using a widget, through a browser or SMS. While the company hasn’t given away what it plans to do with the latest round of investments, international expansion shouldn’t be ruled out – Obopay has a presence in India and a number of big names are falling over themselves to bring mobile money transfer to developing economies.

NFC coming to Windows Mobile with Sirit deal

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

RFID company Sirit has struck a deal with Microsoft that could see NFC – the so called ‘tap and go’ mobile payment system – coming to Windows Mobile devices. According to the twosome, Microsoft will use Sirit’s embedded software and technology to speed up NFC adoption for Microsoft-powered handsets, as well as developing applications to support contactless payments.

Microsoft said it intends to develop application programming interfaces (APIs) and other support to give mobile makers and applications developers a hand with producing NFC-enabled devices.

NFC is typically associated with mass market consumer devices rather than the more business-y Windows Mobile device – could this be a sign Microsoft is willing to follow BlackBerry and get a little more consumer? Either way, the Sirit deal it sounds like good news for Windows Mobile users.
