RIM announces its first ever Flip

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

Research In Motion (RIM), makers of the popular mobile phone brand BlackBerry, have today announced their first flip-open phone, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 smartphone. The phone has been in the news for quite a while now, with all the publications dubbing it as the ‘kickstart 8220‘.

The phone is a quad-band EDGE based smartphone that boasts two color displays – the internal with a 240 x 320 LCD screen while the external LCD is capable of previewing incoming emails, text messages and phone calls. The Pearl Flip is Wi-Fi enabled for faster browsing and comes with an interesting feature – Speaker Independent Voice Recognition (SIVR) for Voice Activated Dialing (VAD). Like most other smartphones in the market, the phone has the usual features built into it.

USA’s T-Mobile will be the exclusive carrier of the phone, with other carriers around the globe getting the phone soon.

Personally, I’d prefer the bold than the flip.

E*TRADE comes to the BlackBerry

Friday, June 6th, 2008

If you fancy a bit of wheeling and dealing on the go, then share trading company E*TRADE has come up with a bit of software that should help you. The E*TRADE

Mobile Pro software pretty much does everything the desktop version does, only this time on your BlackBerry. According to E*TRADE, the software has:
• Free real-time streaming stock and options quotes
• The ability to trade equities and options, including certain conditional orders
• Brokerage and bank account QuickTransfers, including those from outside financial institutions
• Live watchlists and portfolios
• CompleteView of all E*TRADE accounts on one screen
• Secure transactions backed by the E*TRADE Complete Protection Guarantee

At present this is exclusive to BlackBerry devices including the Curve and the Pearl and E*TRADE hasn’t said anything about bringing the software to any other smartphones yet. I can’t imagine we’ll have to wait too long – this looks absolutely like Windows Mobile (and iPhone) heartland.
