The only thing a RAZR is good for? Stopping a bullet!

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Reader Darren King knocked me over this Gizmodo story about a chap who took a bullet to his chest.

Only that’s exactly where his Motorola RAZR was — sat in his breast pocket.

“I stopped and I lifted up my sweatshirt and I took out the cell phone to check it to see if it was damaged and this bullet falls out,” Richard told the local CBS affiliate WWL. He said the shot—which was strong enough to tear a hole in his sweatshirt—felt like a punch to the chest.

Well I never.

It’s ok though, as Gizmodo explains:

Investigators said that the bullet could have come from as far away as a quarter of a mile, and that people shoot guns in that area all the time.

So, just like Bas Vegas, Basildon, Essex, then?

“Who” do you think you are using that RAZR camera?

So I went to see the Who last night in Hamilton, EXCELLENT show I must say. For being in their 60’s, Roger & Pete still know how to rock.

The one thing that amazed me (that always amazes me) is people taking pictures with their crappy camera phones. Do they not realize that’s not going to show up? I have an N95, with a 5 megapixel camera, and from 26 rows away, this is what my pictures looked like.

They aren’t even *that* great.

So what makes people think this tiny little, what does a RAZR have, 1.2 megapixels on a good day? camera is going to take pictures that you can even make something out on? “Look look, there he is, he’s that white square right there!”

Same thing with video & sound clips. The husband had his E62 out trying to record some sound clips, when he got home and listened they were so garbled you could barely make out two words. The only reason why I took pictures (and video, which I’m going to upload tonight) is because I know on an N95, it’s going to turn out at least legible/audible/etc.

Get a better camera phone, or bring a real camera.

(PS, it’s often said that cell phones are the new “lighters” at concerts, you know, slow song, wave your cell phone in the air. Not so at the Who, the lighters were out in full force :)

Moto phones’ future in Qualcomm man’s hands

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

So whos getting the poison chalice of the top job at Motorolas handset division (well on its way to be being rechristened Motorolas ailing handset division by practically everyone in the media)? Step up to the plate, Sanjay Jha, former COO of Qualcomm.

Jha, as well as being head of the devices business, will become the co-CEO of the company from this week.

Ive had the pleasure of listening to Jha speak a few times – on initial impressions hes a whip-smart, energetic and good-humoured individual and hes well used to talking up all manner of yet-to-go-mainstream applications. That said, Qualcomm is very obviously not a handset company and gets all its device needs serviced by OEMs and for that reason Jha is an interesting appointment.

Qualcomms interests are diverse – like Motorolas – so you can see Jhas attraction for the board as the co-CEO of the company. As for finding Motorolas next Razr or iPhone killer, though, his Qualcomm background will either be kill or cure for the handset division.

Another reason not to buy a RAZR

Wednesday, May 28th, 2008

As observed by Dan, The Register reports a bug in the Motorola RAZR:

A bug in Motorola’s RAZR firmware could allow a malformed JPG file sent over MMS to overflow the stack, theoretically making it able to execute arbitrary code.

… and do what, precisely? ;-)

So you can execute arbitrary code and, I dunno, maybe do a naughty calculation. Like spell out BOOBLESS on the display (80087355)?

Or take you to a particularly naughty mobile web site that doesn’t display properly at all? Next. Dinny worry.

Motorola gets back with 3

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Motorola is getting some love from 3 once again after spell out in the cold, with the operator reintroducing its handsets to its network for the first time in 18 months. The first device off the block will be the HSDPA-enabled RAZR2 V9,

According to the company, 3 has decided to welcome Motorola back into the fold because of its “renewed focus on powerful 3G handsets like the RAZR2 V9″ and a compelling roadmap to boot. 3 is now training up its sales staff for the reintroduction.

While it’s good news for Motorola that it’s got another operator customer on board and another channel to get its handsets out the door, it seems a little bit of a shame that it started with the RAZR – it doesn’t exactly showcase Moto’s drive to move forward with its product design.
