RumourMill: DELL’s Smartphone

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

dell_logopng

Sources at various titles have picked up news that DELL is on the brink of announcing a Smartphone, most likely at Mobile World Congress.

The Wall Street Journal has it the PC maker has been designing a prototype of an iPhone and BlackBerry ilk, for over a year now. They even have news that it could be of a touch screen variety too, with Google’s Android and Microsoft’s Windows Mobile OS being both likely contenders for the platform of choice.

They quoted an analyst over at Kaufman Bros., who in turn is quoting from an internal source at DELL on all the information.

Apparently, according to the title, 258 million Smartphone devices were sold last year with that figure expected to rise to 725 million this year. It wasn’t said in so many words, but we’re expecting these stats came from the analyst firm IDC.

Another analyst at that very same firm added further speculation by throwing in his two pennies worth. He mentioned it’s been a few years since DELL hired in a guy from Motorola, who was chiefly responsible for the RAZR and it was about time his recruitment showed some fruits.

Read more on the piece here, it makes for an interesting read and with Reuters running an article too endorsing the WSJ copy, it just further confirms the rumours.

With the likes of Palm showing up in Barcelona with their pre it’ll soon be a crowded place for Smartphones. We’re wondering what DELL will have to do to make the phone standout, if anything at all. We’ll all just have to wait and see, but it’s looking like interesting times are ahead.

RumourMill: HTC 2009 product line up leaked

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

In what appears to be the first major leak of the year, HTC’s full product road map for 2009 and possibly many other years to come has just tipped up.

Their unofficial, official, nonofficial line up first came to our attention via Engadget, with the actual leak stemming from PPC Geeks. Kudos to them!

All that’s really on show are photographic images of the High Tech Computer Corporation supposed new products, and their internal product code names. Nonetheless, it’s still a mighty bounty of pictures showing possibly everything coming out from HTC in the near future.

There are a few notable handsets that caught our eye, the first being their next Android phone seen at the top of the page.

Another mobile that grabbed our worthy attention is the HTC Touch HD Pro - their HD phone, only with a keyboard.

Dave Weinstein over at Gizmag mentioned to us about its existence at Nokia World last year, where we dropped an email to HTC only to be chuckled at. It looks like the codenamed Tungsten is a reality after all, who’s sniggering now.

Perhaps we’re being spoilt by the amount of information being sprung by various companies of late, with the likes of Nokia having their possible full line up leaked including every detail known to man.

We’re getting to the stage that we’re now all very blasé about the lack of details being leaked out these days. We want more!

Come on Smoking Guns, show us the goods.

It’s no longer good enough anymore just to show us images and data sheets; we need the actual delivery of the handsets, market trends, focus group studies and 101 faults with the phone - or nothing at all.

It wouldn’t be entirely fair to just repost all the PPC Geeks images, seeing as they’ve gotten the scoop after all.

We don’t really want to rob them of the credit either, nor do we wish to take away any notoriety from PPC Geek - so please visit their site for all the product line up.

And for the Smoking Guns, come on, buck up your ideas or we won’t pay any attention!

RumourMill: iPhone Nano arrival gathers Christmas weight

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

untitled2

News has reached us from the phone accessory case maker XSKN’s website and via TrustedReviews the iPhone Nano could be a reality after all. As the well known company has started making and selling cases for that exact handset.

Since the beginning of time, well, the last few months really, rumour of a new Apple phone has come to light. In keeping with the existing iPod range, the Nano model being their smallest has been attached to this speculative concept.

Although to be entirely honest the Shuffle is the smallest, but who in their right mind would buy and use a screen-less key-less mobile. Hence, the Nano being the next obvious choice in the iPhone’s lineage naming.

XSKN a popular maker of cases for mobiles now has a range of cases especially designed to fit the iPhone Nano. A plethora of ‘masks’ can be seen on their site, all adding to the possibility of the new phone being just around the corner.

What adds even more weight to the expected news of the Nanos arrival is that you can already buy the cases, even before the phone has been official announced or even confirmed by Apple.

With Mac World being only a few weeks away, the likelihood of the handset being unveiled seems a distinct possibility after all. And with 17 different styles of the casing’s finishes to choose from, you’ll be hard pushed not to believe the phone will be here soon.

Either way they could just be hedging their bets here, or they know something that we don’t know we should know but have known about the knowing all along.

RumourMill: CES 2009 – Sans Microsoft Zune mobile phone

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Popular news-blog site Gizmodo has it from MS there will be no Zune phone at CES in January next year after all.

Despite the rumour mill reaching Defcon 5 of late over the appearance of the multimedia mobile phone by Microsoft, it now appears that Brian Seitz , Group Manager of Zune has now officially denied it. With the likelihood of a Zune phone making an appearance of that of the Dodo walking this Earth once again.

There were some supposed news anal-ysts of late that started all the gossip, with even CNBC joining the ranks. All with the reports of some hardware noted that could have, might have, should have been Zune related.

This apparently started with details of ‘Project Pink’ being marked for CES, which now seems to be just a range of services that could allow a Zune-esque services a to run on a Windows Mobile platform. Hurrah!

The site has even stated from a source over at ZDNET that this could still make the light of day at CES after all, despite the phone not being around. There’s even the possibility of Zune like services running on other mobile platforms too.

See more on the story here.

To add another tentative link to a flightless bird, perhaps we could even see Zune running on Android’s Penguin based OS as well.

RumourMill: New Nokia Touch Screen phone?

Monday, December 8th, 2008

The rumour mill has gone into over drive with the sighting of a new Nokia phone, a full touch screen mobile – not even a week after their symposium in Barcelona started.

Slashgear amongst others, starting with them, have all picked up on this story and run with it like the Olympic torch.

We passed this along to be confirmed by our newly gained and most excellent contacts now inside Nokia. Who in turn passed it along to HQ in Finland, where the answer came back that no one was clued in on the model.

With the official word being that it just looks like a ‘marketing concept shot’, which we concur with. As we’re unsure of a handset coming out that boasts a “Direct UI simplifies interaction with standard strokes and gestures”.

Some other news came to light just as we were writing this up, in the form of an update on the main news site.

They’ve also had the image confirmed by Nokia, where it just appears to be a shot showing off the latest UI and its features.

A feature set that does look very familiar to the one we saw supported on the N97, which we extensively used last week.

Perhaps it’s more than just a concept mock up after all and could be a definite glimpse into the future.

Does anyone have a Flux Capacitor so we can find out? McFly? McFly?

See here for more on the story.

RumourMill: Windows Mobile 6.5 images leaked + new Internet Explorer for mobiles

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

This time the leak wasn’t Nokia’s, it was Microsoft’s turn with the new mobile OS and also an emulator for IE 6 shows up.

The website Smartphonefrance has managed to obtain the first images of the upcoming OS, first uttered from the lips of Steve Ballmer at an Australian press conference on the tail end of last week.

From first impressions, it looks a lot different to version 6.1 that we’re using today. Other sites have drawn a comparison to the Zune in its appearance. Perhaps Microsoft are again standardising on a single OS view for all operating systems and upcoming releases, it would make sense after all.

We’re now wondering how they’re going to launch the mobile OS. For Windows Mobile 6.1 they announced it to the press on Aprils Fools day at the Comedy Store. I think we’re still waiting to get the joke; what’s the punch line Microsoft?

The other MS story almost falls on the coat tails of the Opera Mini 4.2 beta release, with news of an emulator now being available on Internet Explorer Mobile 6.

It was unveiled to an unsuspecting public at Microsoft’s EMEA TechEd developers conference in Spain.

Improvements have apparently been made around feature sets such as, text wrap, adobe flash integration, touch screen support, zoom levels and others too.

We couldn’t really get a complete feel for how it’s changed, as we didn’t have access to a previous emulator, which made it difficult to fairly gauge on the improvements.

Although it does look like an improvement as to what we’ve seen on current shipping handsets, with a much dated version of IE.

For more on the IE emulator see here, and for more on Smartphonefrance leaked images see here for a roughly translated English version

RumourMill: Nokia’s FULL line up for the future leaked

Monday, November 10th, 2008

With the mobile industry appearing to have more leaks than the Welsh rugby supporters at the weekend’s international game, Nokia has come out and trumped them all.

It appears the entire Nokia hush-hush-ever-so-secret product line up from now until the end of days has been leaked to the website Engadget.com

There are just so so many to go in to, it’s a feast for your eyes and something to keep your mouths watering until they find their way into your grubby little hands.

Choice items that made us drool like a premiership football player taking an IQ test are as follows –

Codenamed Eitri, running version 5.0.1 of the OS - Landscape candybar with QWERTY, 3.5-inch 640×350 display, minimum 8GB ROM, microSD, pressure sensitive touch UI with tactile feedback and gestures, charging via USB, 5MP AF camera with dual LED flash, integrated compass and accelerometer, proximity sensor, FM transmitter.

It’s still in development according to the chart. Could this be the replacement for the E90 we’ve been waiting for?

Code nameed Ivalo, running 5.0 of the OS - Follow-on to IP08. 3.5-inch wide touchscreen, 32GB ROM, AGPS, FM transmitter and receiver, 5MP camera, WiFi, TV-out, Bluetooth

That’s right, a touch screen with 32GB. Sorry Apple, have you gone a bit quiet over there, speak up old chap.

Codenamed Corolla, running again 5.0.1 of the OS - 3.0-inch VGA display, non-touch, 8MP camera, half QWERTY keyboard, 128MB RAM, 8GB ROM, WiFI, UPnP, HSPA, AGPS, FM transmitter.

Could this be Nokia’s first ever 8 megapixel camera phone, the one arriving to the party rather late?

Codenamed Surfer, running 3.2 of the OS - Landscape, 2.6-inch QVGA, QWERTY, GPS, NaviWheel, 5MP camera, DVB-H, quadband GSM, HSDPA, WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0.

This one appears to have been completed, judging by the chart on the website. Wahoo!

Dive over to the site for more goodies, but these are the ones we’ve found of unsubstantiated interest so far.

Visit the page directly here, enjoy.

RumourMill: Windows Mobile 6.5 due next year, Windows Mobile 7 the year after

Monday, November 10th, 2008

Steve Ballmer was in Australia at the end of last week visiting the carrier Telstra. Msmobiles.com tuned in to his webcast and posted a breakdown of all that was said – including Windows Mobile 6.5 arriving in 2009 followed by version 7.

A lot of business waffle was passed from his lips, with talk of software services and hosted business applications from the likes of Exchange, Live meetings and their ilk.

During the Q & A is where he got interesting and not in the over excited and zealous way, with the ‘won’t please somebody medicate me now’ act that he’s known for.

When someone asked “what can we expect from Windows Mobile in next 12 months?” his answer made peoples ears stand to attention, whilst surely waking everyone else up.

He lead with ‘some good work has been done by Microsoft’ without mentioning any specific examples, he also passed along that Windows Mobile has been sold on 20 million devices.

Then, on the same answer he dropped the clanger by confirming ‘Windows Mobile 6.5 for next year’ and ‘Windows Mobile 7 for Q3 of 2010.

Sounds like he also put down Google’s Android by utter sound bites along the lines of it’s ‘just their first phone’ and that ‘Android has no business model’.

For more on the see msmobiles.com here; our hearty thanks to them tuning in and breaking it all down.
