Nokia 5800 users.. ShoZu is coming shortly

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009

For all those about to find themselves sporting the Nokia 5800 handset (launched officially here in the UK on Friday), don’t panic.

MIR’s James Whatley has it via Twitter from ShoZu that their Nokia app will be live and downloadable in a few weeks time. They’re just tweaking the UI as a result of the 5800’s touchscreen.

Good news!

Sonim’s Xtreme Performance 3 handset arrives here shortly

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Oh yes!

COME ON!

You know what a big fan I was of the Sonim XP1? Back in the day? They’re still superb indestructible phones.

There are two XP3 “Xtreme Performance” handsets on their way to MIR Towers and I can’t wait to see them. There is something ever-so-satisfying about being in possession of a handset that can handle it.

It’s the same feeling walking about the Earth with a SatPhone.

Although your average common-or-garden SatPhone can’t handle water. The Xp3 can. It can handle 1 metre’s worth of water for 30 minutes before it breaks a sweat. Or if you’d like to get technical, it’s IP-57 certified.

It’ll operate in -20 Celsius to +60.

It’s MILF accredited.

(That is MIL-810F certified against rain, fog and salt air — all those things that screw up your average Nokia).

And of course, it’s backed by Sonim’s 3 year unconditional guarantee. That is, if it breaks, they’ll replace it. Done. No arsing about, no lengthy messing around. They’ll give you a new one.

So I’ve been sent two.

They do this, Sonim. I’ve been given one to test. Right? That’s one to show to the cameras, one to talk about and whatnot. And the other one, I have to try and destroy.

Absolutely really try and destroy. (Read my attempts trying to destroy the XP1 outside the Four Seasons in Silicon Valley).

We’ll have copious content on the Xp3 up as soon as I get them.

Meantime… any suggestions for how we should try to destroy the handset on camera?

The T-Mobile G1 coming shortly

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

Quoting our Tech Contributor, Dan Lane, on the T-Mobile G1:

Every time I read something new about the G1 I want one even more… did you know it does Growl-like notifications?!

G1 excitement is building big time and we’ll be bringing you a first look at the retail version of the device toward the end of this week.

I can’t wait…

Who’s going to get one on Thursday?

A video treat coming shortly

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

I’m shortly publishing another 30 minute riot of joy featuring our Future of Web Apps conference coverage which includes a rather interesting normob walk-about and lots of shout-outs.

Plus we reveal the identity of this secret handset:

Did you guess it? I know one reader, John, guessed correctly. I didn’t moderate his comment for a few days to keep the suspense. All those emailing hoping it was the next generation Google Handset, I’m afraid not.

Standby for our first mid-week show — by popular demand — and because we published the awards video this Monday.

CTIA MIR Show is coming shortly

Monday, September 15th, 2008

I sat down last night to edit the 6 hours worth of footage that I took at CTIA, together with Ben’s stuff from Beijing and James’ stuff from Helsinki. There’s a lot. A LOT. I recognised that I wouldn’t be able to finish the edit in one fell swoop.

So I took a break. The net result, standby for our piece-of-brilliance later this evening.
