KeeMobile launches soon

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

I had a note in from Tim Belfall of Condico Mobile. Here it is….

Hi Ewan

The great thing about MIR is the cross range of subjects, personalities, entertainment and news, so it is a very sad loss that MIR is disappearing for the greater majority of viewers.

Graham Higginson and myself are putting together a MIR like (lite) site for mobile industry types to swap stories, news and comments. Called keemobile.com (that’s kee not key) It should be fully up and running by the end of the week. We’ll be a bit rough around the edges for a while but hopefully we’ll get the formula right in the end with the assistance of expert contributors and commentators.

If there is still time, and if you want to, we would be grateful if you could pop a comment on your site about us.

Thanks to you and the team for the dedication and fun you all put into smstextnews/MIR.

Good luck and cheers.

Tim

Skydeck heading to Europe. Soon. Ish.

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I wouldn’t hold your breath though.

Skydeck, the fantabulous ‘your mobile IS your social network’ service that integrates with your mobile operator to get hold of a copy of your calling records, is coming to Europe. Forget the fact that you might find British Gas as your number one rated friend (after the amount of times you’ve had to call them).

;-)

Skydeck is smart, very smart indeed. But it’s been one of those services that we, here in Europe, smile quietly about. We know that it will take flippin’ years for any flippin’ mobile operator in Europe — well, in the United Kingdom at least — to ‘get’ Skydeck. Or to offer connectivity for anything less than a billion quid a month license fee.

I’ve heard European rumblings for a while — and this morning, Russ MacDonald tweeted me with news via Marcus Malek who mentioned the news. I’m not sure on his source though.

I think I’ll stick to my ‘Skydeck at some point in the next eon’ viewpoint. I could certainly see some of the European operators being open to the concept of helping deploy it.

But can you imagine a UK operator helping out?

We’re off to Paris soon

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Vive le Mobil!

The first stop on our all new DeviceAnywhere European Roadshow tour arrives just after Christmas.

That’s right, we’re heading to Paris first, closely followed by London. As many of the MIR Team as possible will be joining us for the evening event.

If you’re a mobile developer in Paris (or nearby), we want to get you on film and tell the planet about what you’re up to — drop me a note to let me know if we should be interviewing you.

More news soon…

Data and SMS roaming charges soon to be cheaper

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

News has reached us from Reuters that governments in the European Union are set to regulate the costs on data usage and text messages whilst roaming. No need to sell your organs anymore whilst on holiday, just to cover your costs.

They also believe this could open up talks on other services being acted upon in a similar fashion. Wahoo!

Meaning there could be no need any more to sell of those miscellaneous limbs or superfluous bodily fluids whilst aboard, just to send an MMS.

The EU Telecoms Commissioner has outlined expanding the current cap in place for mobile phone calls away from the country of origin to now include roaming text messages and web surfing until 2013.

This is all due to be set in place on July 1 2009 when the joint legislation takes effect in the European Parliament, just in time for the summer holidays too. Hurrah! More money for fun and less money to staying in touch.

It’s been outlined the cost should be at 11 Euros cents for a roaming text message, where it currently stands at the average exorbitant rate of 29.

For someone that travels a lot this is a much welcomed piece of good news; more on the piece visit here.
