Top 10 tell tale signs you’re paying too much for your tariff

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

1. Text messages aren’t included in your package and you’re paying twice as much as the national debt of Uruguay for usage each month

2. The minutes you’re allowed are only enough to call customer services to complain about the tariff

3. Calling a ‘local number’ costs the same as calling Australia at peak hours and an hour

4. Sending a single MMS cost you more than the phone did when you first bought it

5. Internet browsing is at such a high rate you’re seriously thinking about personally calling Congress for a bail out, only you’ve just gone over your minutes

6. The last bill that arrived had an extra page just for all the noughts after the box that read ‘Your Current Balance is’

7. Using a landline is cheaper on all accounts

8. When going over your allotted data usage per month costs more than four times what you initially should be paying, it’s now time to switch tariffs

9. When going over your allotted minutes per month costs more than five times what you initially should be paying, it’s now time to switch tariffs because you’re dumb

10. When going over your allotted texts per month costs more than six times what you initially should be paying, it’s time to switch tariffs because you’re dumb and you best turn in your handset too

Addressing the economy’s issues and quicker than our own government is the network 3, who has just announced a sub-tenner tariff.

In days that feel like the end of days, it’s always good to see someone’s looking out for the common man, by offering them a great deal.

The deal that comes along in the form of a free 3G phone, 100minutes/texts on any network, 300minutes of calls to fellow 3 users, free voicemail access and also unlimited windows live messenger and Skype usage.

Available from December 23rd, this Mix & Match 100 tariff seems to be the bee’s knees. How does it match up to others around? It doesn’t even have a single competitor out there that we can see.

It’s available both in-store and online, great for avoiding everyone else that’s out shopping at this time of year. And no one likes a crowd, unless you’re a pick pocket.

The way this particular tariff works, is that you can mix and match (hence the name) between 100 minutes and 100 texts, with 1 minute = 1text. Previously their best deal was Mix and Match 300 for £15, with the same mobile phone being thrown in, seen in the Sony Ericsson K660i.

A handset that comes along with a 2MP camera, obviously with 3G with HSDPA and in a choice of silver on black or lime on white – an exclusive colour for 3.

If there’s ever a time for £9 tariff, with a phone like this it’s now. Hurrah for 3!

Isn’t it about time others step up to the plate with their offerings too?

All I Want For Christmas…

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

In an ideal world, I would ask for happiness, and the end of this dismal time of year. But of course I’m not here to discuss that! No, no, no… What do I want from the world of Mobile this Christmas?

Firstly, I call for originality.

I personally think originality should be the first aspect of any design; and one would imagine that being original with design would be high if not on top of the list of things to do when making a new product… But I don’t see it a lot.

Most mobile phones are pretty much the same thing with a slight difference, and upgraded something-or-another; and it doesn’t hold interest. I don’t need a mobile that is only slightly different from the one I own now, so please, don’t try and sell it to me!

I’m not one full of ideas (and I will never claim to be), however, there are thousands of younger people in the UK, and millions around the world who I’m sure have at least a single idea on how to improve mobile phones, and come up with an original idea.

It is due to that, that I find no excuse for what many manufacturers are doing now; and when I look in the Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U or any other mobile-phone shop, and I see the same design specifications and in some cases even just the same physical design, I’m annoyed!

Secondly, a good deal!

Now this is where you get the “student” side to me; the side where I source out the cheapest possible deal. Going back to my first point, do something original at the same time (if you can), like Nokia and their “Comes With Music” – I said it when it came out, and I’ll say it now – BRILLIANT! That’s the kind of thing I love to see.

When I walk around the shops, complaining of the cold, wishing I had a Hot Chocolate, or even that Christmas would end, I want to be tempted to fall back in love with Christmas again. Give me something I can get excited about; a price that is so outrageously competitive that I will part with my cash there and then.

The Mobile networks? Well, couldn’t you give me a Christmas present too? How about a nice reward of getting say half of whatever I top up in the month of December free? (So I top up £10, and I actually get £15?)

And finally…

And this goes to pay-as-you-go more than anything else; bring me some good news about tariffs!

I’ve noticed more than ever my addiction to Facebook, and I’ll admit I spend far too much of my time thinking about Facebook and being on it. It’s edging on the slightly crazy spectrum, but I’ll survive.

The point is though; I can’t feed my addiction well enough. I want to browse on my mobile for a reasonable price, and at the same time I don’t want to be on a contract.
I know some networks (Orange are all of who I can think of right now), offer little bundle systems for browsing, which is a step in the right direction; but I want this on all networks; so that no matter who I am with, I can browse away on my mobile endlessly updating my status, and poking people. Or even check my e-mail; for a good price!

I know it’s too early to be discussing Christmas, but with any luck someone might take notice before the Christmas Eve rush, and this Christmas could be full of lots of mobile delights!

Ahhh… facts… :-)

Orange Tariff Shakeup

Saturday, July 5th, 2008

Ricky here!

Ewan and the podcast team have been giving Orange a hard time recently about mobile data, especially about their unlimited Bebo. You can read about his rants here, here and here.

It seems that Orange have listened to its customer and is now offering all 35+ plans unlimited free data which is 500mb fair usage. This is available to existing customers as well; all eligible customers will be migrated on their July bill date and be sent an SMS and information in their bill. If you want to be upgraded straight away just give customer services a call, and you account will be upgraded to include the extra benefits. There have been reports that some operators are telling customers it is only on new connections, this is NOT true and ask them to check with someone senior. My understanding is this is also applicable if you receive a discount on your tariff i.e. retention offer or online discount as long as your plan is a stupid animal and then 35 or higher you will be eligible.

orange plans

Not only have Orange improved data on their tariffs they have also altered some of their other plans. The Racoon Plan (god these names are stupid) will get an increase of 75 and 100 minutes respectively on the 25 and 30 tariffs. Canary Plans will increase the amounts of texts by 100 to 500 texts.
Wow, what an improvement last month they were offering customers 30mb for 8 a month, and now they are including data in all their higher tariffs. I am sure the podcast team will be discussing this in further detail, but it seems that orange have now started to take data seriously. Let us know your how you get on upgrading to the new tariffs especially if you are having trouble.
