Trutap – mjelly mobile 2.0 service of the week

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Hello – it’s James from mjelly.com touching down here at Mobile Industry Review. Trutap is a mobile startup that’s been in the headlines quite a bit lately and it’s this week’s “Mobile 2.0 Service of the Week”.

What is it

Trutap is a mobile application that does four main things. Firstly, it aggregates all the major IM networks, similar to other services like Nimbuzz, ebuddy, heysan, mig33 and so on. However, that’s only 25% of what Trutap does. Trutap also provides a mobile gateway into all the major social networking, blogging and photo services, a community platform with profiles and other social features as well as a content platform which pushes out news and links on a daily basis.

Overall Trutap currently supports at least 8 IM networks, 10 blogging and photo sites, 8 social and digital lifestyle services and 8+ content channels which means it provides a gateway to well over 30 different digital communications, social and content platforms.

So – Trutap is a lot more than the simple IM aggregator that some people think it is.

Trutap have also shared a few facts about the service so far:

- 250K users with a good industry activity rate
- 80% of users are in Indian, Asian and African continents
- 70% of new users have updated their status, location and even home town within Trutap
- Facebook messenger is growing at a huge rate, now bigger than Google Talk on their network

Why is it interesting?

Trutap has been in the news recently because all staff have been put on notice. They were unfortunate that their current investor got hit hard in the Credit Crunch and is no longer investing anywhere… so the company has been effectively orphaned. Not a good time as we all know, and therefore raising more cash at short notice has been a difficult task with VCs focusing on trying to support their existing portfolio.

Trutap has taken a fair bit of stick from some quarters, but it’s got to be said that the new version of the service, which they built with the mobile development agency Future Platforms is really rather good. There are some fantastic user interface elements such as the scrolling navigation bar at the bottom of the screen which allows you to easily cycle through the different functions. A lot of people have critised Trutap for not going for a mobile web model from the start but if you look at the software they’ve built it really would be very difficult to deliver the same features and user experience over that platform.

Trutap spent the last year rolling out the first version of the product (aggregator of IM and Blogs) and building the second version (social network) which launched a few weeks ago. The first version launched in November 2007 so they’ve actually built a fair bit in a short space of time and comparing their take-up to competitors like ebuddy (10m downloads) is a bit unfair as Trutap have been going a much shorter time. The app has also been ported for a massive amount of handsets to provide a really wide potential user-base. Basically Trutap are positioned really well to begin really ramping up users and usage with the v2 app – its just unfortunate that the cut-off in funding has happened at this point.

Trutap has also begun to develop a couple of very interesting new ideas – the community system is planned to evolve into a virtual gifting and currency system, similar to the very successful model developed by the Japanese site Mobile Game Town. Secondly, Trutap has begun to create a platform for content brands with a number of partnerships underway including with a large mobile media business. These sorts of developments could seriously boost Trutap’s revenues and user-base if they get the chance to fully develop them!

Trutap is also one of the most popular apps in the mjelly directory so it seems there are quite a few fans of the service out there. Let’s hope Trutap manage to keep going and finish the job – all the best of luck to them.

Trutap staff on notice; Deal of the century to be had!

Monday, December 1st, 2008

Trutap, the mobile messaging community service, has put all 30 of their London Kings Cross team on notice. The company has had to make severe cut backs to reduce it’s monthly burn in order to keep it’s service live.

This is confirmed by a high level Trutap executive I know well.

And it’s a bit of a shame. The company has been innovating like no tomorrow — and the newly released version 2.0 if Trutap is absolutely phenomenal. To give you an idea of just how well received the new version is, about 70% of the service’s users have updated their status, location and home town! 70%!

The original backer of Trutap was a Hedge Fund by the name of Tudor. It’s perhaps no surprise that, as a result of the credit crunch, Tudor have orphaned Trutap and have reportedly stopped investing in private companies.

During new investment rounds (Trutap was due a £2-4m one shortly), it traditional, often expected and typically required that the original investor participate in some kind of ‘tag along’ manner in the next round of investment. Without their original backer to play, Trutap find themselves in a challenging position.

One person’s challenge is another person’s bounteous opportunity though.

If you’re in control of a media company, you should be hovering like a massive falcon above Trutap — and hoover them up. And I think you’ll get a very, very good deal. With over a quarter of a million users and very well received new version hitting the marketplace right now, Trutap is poised to make a ton of cash from mobile advertising, sponsorship and the virtual currency system (due out next year). They’ve already started making revenues — they’ve proved the concept, as it were. But they need an investor who is able to keep the company moving whilst they move into profits.

It really would be a shame to see Trutap simply go to the wall. The IP alone there — their instant messaging platform — is hugely, hugely valuable. In fact I can think of a load of companies who could either buy or license it for their own ends. The company and the service is due to continue in skeleton-mode for the moment (their software is that well built, it only requires one or two folk to keep it ticking over).

If you’re on the hunt for an investment like Trutap — a ready-made mobile community with users and a team to support it — and you’d like a really good deal, drop me a note and I’ll connect you to their senior management.

I wish the chaps at Trutap every success.

Trutap rolling out new IM services tonight – inc. Facebook Chat

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

250,000 Trutap users are, this evening, finding that they can now use a heckuvalot more instant messenger services than they could yesterday to connect with each other. Given that Trutap has a massive amount users in developing countries who love the ultra cost efficient communications medium of IM on mobile, this is set to be a very welcome addition.

I know that quite a few Mobile Industry Review readers will be pleased to see that Trutap now have support for Google Talk too. Let me hand over to their CTO, Carl, for an update:

Ewan,

Great catching up last week @ the Smartphone show, as promised, more Trutap news for you tonight…

The team here in Kings X have just rolled out a load more IM clients across Trutap (as promised in my last post on the site from the Hornet Content news). From today our global users, over 250K since launch 11 months ago, can now enjoy Facebook Chat, Google Talk (yeah, took us a while), Rediff Bol (big in India) and Jabber services, all alongside the existing MSN, Yahoo!, AIM and ICQ messenger services.

We’re not just finishing there though. In the next few weeks we’ll be adding even more IM clients, including MySpace, Gadu-Gadu, LiveJournal IM, Bonjour, Groupwise, IRC, XMPP, Sametime and Zephyr. So in all, Trutap users will have the choice of about 17 IM clients, I think that’s fair to say, more than any other mobile application in the world! I also have some others planned after that…

Why? you might ask… We know that our users have their preferred IM clients and from research they don’t want to keep opening multiple apps one at a time, we bring all of them easily in one place. One of the best parts about the new IM clients is the fact that they’re already available in the current application, so users won’t need to upgrade the app to find their favourite IM.

Finally, Facebook haven’t released their chat client on the “people’s phones” yet, so I am expecting this to go down well with the main stream!

Speak soon, new client next…

Carl.

Carl, nice one — we’re actually about to put up the vid we took of you last week at the Symbian Smartphone show. This is super news — you’re creating a truly valuable service there. I’m really looking forward to seeing the new Trutap client!

By the way, we recently added Carl to the Who’s Who in Mobile list. Check out his entry here.

Trutap launches Hornet content platform

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

I got a note in this morning from Carl Uminski, CTO of Trutap. I caught up with Carl very briefly at CTIA in San Francisco last month and he showed me a demo of the next version of Trutap — it’s going to be quite stunning. IM, Content, Social Networking — all aimed at the emerging markets (and India in particular). I think that kind of audience will eat up Trutap.

Part of the new roll-out — including this whizzy new client I saw — includes offering Trutap users the ability to subscribe to and receive content.

Carl’s got some news about this:

- – - – -

Hi Ewan,

How’s things?

Neil told me about a little trial you were doing regarding PR and press releases, so i thought i’d drop you a quick email to tell you about our new content subscription system, HORNET!

Firstly, what do you think of the name?

We built Hornet because it was a great way for us to supply our users across the world with the kind of content they’ve been asking us for. We’ve been working away behind the scenes to sign deals with a load of major content publishers around the globe. Hornet will let those partners plug in text, images and advertising into their content for free and off-deck – cool eh!

The first publisher we’re rolling out on Hornet is Goal.com. Users who subscribe to the Goal.com free alerts will get breaking news stories and scores from the English Premiership at least three times a day. Goal.com is live across the service right now and it won’t cost the user a penny to subscribe – remember the world loves the english footie!

I don’t want to give too much away but along with rolling out additional content providers, we’re going to be announcing some more fantastic stuff in the near future, I will be sure to let you know when we’re ready… also, when you get time, we should catch up on our new version, the UI has come a long way since we met in SF, not long till launch.

Stay tuned :-)

Carl.

Carl, thanks for writing — and thank you to Neil and yourself for giving this new format a try. I think it’s a lot more useful and relevant for our readers.

To answer your point, Carl, I reckon HORNET is a wicked name. Good choice. I like the energetic connotations!

If you’ve got content (RSSable) that you think might be relevant to the Trutap audience, I definitely recommend you talk to Carl. Mail me and I can connect you.
