Vodafone’s dismal online billing service needs an upgrade

Monday, January 19th, 2009

It’s problem Monday. A moment ago it was iTunes DRM annoying the hell out of me, and this morning it’s mobile operator front-end billing platforms. You know the kind I mean — the ones held together by sticky-tape and a lot of panicking by teams at Accenture, Detica or whoever it is that’s actually running the platforms.

Vodafone’s online billing service that allows you to login and check your bill is ok. OK. But it suffers from being thoroughly old. Forget Web 2.0 or even Web 1.0 — this is Web 0.0. Or 0.5. Clunky, quite slow and thoroughly uninformative at the best of times, these systems really are due a nice upgrade at some point.

The systems are causing frustration. Lots of frustration. Witness, here, an email from a rather influential purchaser of telecoms equipment in Europe. I’ve changed his name to Graham rather than give a clue to his identity. His company’s telecoms budget — which he controls — is in the millions. Add in their activities across Europe and it’s getting to Deutsche Post levels (See our story about Deutsche Post outsourcing their telecoms to Telefonica for 350m Euro).

Have a read of his email:

Ewan,

Guess what? Gets a nice email from Vodafone telling me that my bill is available online - just like normal. I go online and just like normal absolutely nothing works, no online statement (how do I know what I am going to be charged?), no info on price plans, no detailed call breakdowns, zilch, nothing. What century are we in? This is rubbish.

I chose to stop getting printed statements because it’s not very green and also there is a lot of confidential information in an itemised bill. Vodafone save money by not sending out bills but quid pro quo they also need to make their IT systems work reliably.

I am converting thousands of mobile handsets, Blackberrys and 3G cards from T-Mobile to Vodafone at work because T-Mobile can’t run a piss up in a brewery and the signal quality sucks. Am I making a mistake? Is there actually a mobile company that knows how to run a business and understands the basics of keeping IT systems available?

Graham

Not good, not good at all.

Alas what the consumer experiences is also what the executives experience. And this is one example of a really annoyed executive whom, I have no doubt, is going to be rather direct with his Vodafone account director when he or she arrives on site.

Still, at least the Voda system performs better than the T-Mobile Bollocks, as I affectionately like to call it. Here’s one indication as to why from a few months back.

T-Mobile UK make me a very happy chappy!

Monday, December 8th, 2008

It’s upgrade time for my T-Mobile Flext Contract, and I have been looking at new phones. The G1 maybe? The INQ 1 is awesome but I not so keen on the three contracts.

I popped into my local T-Mobile shop and asking what was showing up on my account for renewing, and basically I was told I could take a £10 discount for the next six months or untill I decided to upgrade which ever was sooner. Not all customers are eligable for the £10 discount some will get £5, I am unsure of how it is calculated.

I was cautious at this point, I thought I would be agreeing to another 18 month contract and also I did not want to loose my extra add ons (unlimited weekend calls and £5 loyalty discount), but I was assured by the salesman that this would not happen.

The £10 discount is a tactic to stall its customers on upgrading until after Christmas, however you have to ask for it. So if you are due to upgrade in the next month or have an upgrade pending I definitely recommend you to pop into store.

On another related note for those of you who are paying £7.50 for web and walk as an add on, ring up customer care and ask to move onto a wnw tariff. This drops the price of web and walk to £5.

I love it when staff in stores and on the phone are 100% honest with you, and are nice to you. I want to personally thank the member of staff who served me in the Manchester City Centre Branch.

The best thing is I am now paying £20 a month for Flext 30 with unlimited weekend calls and web and walk.

T-Mobile UK you officially rock!

Firmware Upgrade available for the E90 Communicator

Friday, October 10th, 2008

The keen eyes of Steve over at AllAboutSymbian have just come across an update available for Nokia’s E90 Communicator. Currently running firmware version 210.34.75, Nokia has made the jump all the way to v300.34.84.

Initial reports by him suggest that the following changes have been made:

  • Much faster orientation switching (open/close lid etc)
  • Nokia Maps 2.0 now built-in
  • Download! application updated (v 3.1.736)
  • Cosmetic upgrade to Music player
  • Update for Flash Lite 3 and Flash video
  • Wi-Fi improvements
  • New baseline for VoIP
  • Realplayer supports FLV format (i.e FLV files can be played directly like MP4)
Even though my E90 is not my primary phone, I’m going to go ahead and install the upgrade for myself. It’s going to be one big task for me, since it’ll require me installing Windows on my MacBook Pro first.
Update: Ricky tells us that the upgrade has problems with Blackerry connect, so you might want to hold off a while longer.
Update 2: I had a weird problem with the display right after the phone started up after the update. While the inner display did not show anything, the external display displayed the following.

o2 Ireland scrap most of their upgrade schemes

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Reader Rob was not impressed with o2 Ireland recently.

Hey Ewan

A couple weeks ago, I was in a carphonewarehouse where I was told I was eligible for a platinum upgrade on one of my O2 Accounts.. however, the handset which I wanted had not been released, and did not have a release date on it for this country - I wanted a Blackberry Bold.

Today I was told it will be released in the first week of October, which is fine, however, I was told I was no longer eligible for an upgrade. I was told that all of their upgrades had been scrapped except for the “Diamond” upgrade, the criteria to qualify for this is to spend €5,000 in a 12 month contract (roughly €420 a month…).

Previously, they had a system where your upgrades accumulated as you spent, changing from silver, to gold, to platinum, and eventually to diamond if you spend a lot of money with them, now, it’s all gone.

Worse still, their Sim-Free price of a Blackberry Bold is about €600, if you use a “Diamond” upgrade, it will only cost you €199 …

That is hugely, hugely annoying Rob! They just ’stopped’ it? What are you thinking of doing now?

3: Can I upgrade in store? Yes!

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

I was at Lakeside Shopping Centre buying yet another Mac Pro the other day (there simply isn’t anything better for processing video than a top of the range Mac — although buy your RAM and HDD elsewhere!).

Whilst I was waiting for them to stick in a wireless card, I took a tour around the shops.  I popped into the 3 store to see if their excellent S2 Skypephone was available.  Most certainly.  It was right there.  Next to an E71 on a 26/month contract.  Good deals.

I asked the enthusiastic sales chap if I could get an upgrade yet.  I was ready for the usual bollocks from 3.  You see in any other mobile retailer store, you can discuss upgrading and the rest of your account with the sales people in front of you.  However with 3, the sales chaps usually have to ask you to phone India (i.e. 3 support) to sort all that out.

Which totally defeats the object of having a store for any other reason than signing up new customers.  If you’re an existing customer, they’ve been completely useless.

However yesterday the chap was actually able to look up my account and upgrade me there in the shop.  Smart. Finally!

The only trouble?  Heh.  He made a face of pain when he saw that I was one-day-away from being able to upgrade.

“There’s nothing you can do?” I asked him.  He and I both knew that I was a good, quick win — but that I’d probably not be coming into the shop tomorrow.

“No, sorry. But tomorrow…”

No biggie.

I think I’ll wait ’til the N96 is available and upgrade then…

O2 announce UK iPhone upgrades available now

Monday, July 7th, 2008

Between 7am and 7:30am this morning (well for me anyway) O2 sent text and e-mail messages to customers who had registered an interest in upgrading announcing the upgrade shop would open from 8am… it started working from about 8:15.

Of course it’s hung half-way through the process (20 mins so far and counting) and started with a load of page errors, but if you fancy an upgrade and a wait go here: http://www.o2.co.uk/iphone

The news, if anything, here is that upgrades will be shipped by courier direct to upgraders and activated from home via iTunes.

The ViseeO Bluetooth upgrade model for Mercedes cars

Thursday, June 5th, 2008

Steve O’Donnell is one of the most influential data centre and IT infrastructure bloggers on the planet (at The Hot Aisle). He’s only been blogging for a little while, but already, he’s been amazing me with the amount of influential people following what he’s saying. In the IT infrastructure world, many of the top CIO, CTOs and their management teams wield phenomenally large budgets — hundreds of millions in many cases. Steve’s been writing regularly on the challenges and issues facing this audience.

Yesterday, though, I caught up with him and we just happened to be sat in his Mercedes away from the rain when I spied his Viseeo device that looked suspiciously like an old Nokia 6300. But it’s not. It’s much better.

I took a QIK of the experience, below:

More information at http://www.viseeo.com/ and I’m sure you can get them on ebay.

Thanks for taking the time, Steve!
