Ben Smith, SMS Text News contributor and Podcast Master, is heading off to Beijing this summer for the Olympics.
He’s spending 10 days with the GB Paralympic team. And when he’s not looking after our genius basketballers (amongst others), he is hunting for things to review and test — think: navigation, city guides, language tools, social networking tools and related hardware.
Have you got any ideas for kit you’d like him to field test? Drop me a note.
I think Ben should try to get a portable mobile network into China… I'm sure they're far more relaxed about that sort of thing than the Maldivians…………………
The Lonely Planet Audio Phrasebook apps for the iPhone (available from the app store) look quite good… the Mandarin one is the only one that's free and, although I don't speak a word of mandarin it seems to be up to the job of basic conversation… I'd be interested to know how useful these actually are in the real world though.
LOL, yeah, ask him to test one of those portable mobile networks.
I'll be interested how the mobile web performs behind the Great Wall of China!
Don't give him ideas… 🙂
Jonathen – interesting… I hope to be able to try (1) roaming data, (2) local MNO data, (3) official Olympic venue WiFi and (4) local (and hopefully non-tourist) WiFi to see the differences…
