I’m working on the idea of creating an iPhone application for our site.
We don’t obviously need it. There’s a web version, for example.
But it’s worth playing with, isn’t it?
Trouble is, I’m at a bit of a loss about what we could do with an iPhone application for the site. My ideas are thus:
1. RSS reader. So it’ll display the news.
2. Display the headlines in a rotating manner or flickable manner — like the new features box we’ve got on the frontpage. Would be nice to have pics.
3. Some kind of comments integration.
4. Maybe an iPhone shout-out facility that publishes one-liner sentences?
5. An ability to take a picture via the application and send it to us for publication (if you see something good and mobile related).
6. A survey/voting function.
Any ideas?
Perhaps something that looks like iGoogle for the iphone… The comments integration would be good. At the moment, the iphone theme works really well, but integrated comments is a real pain on the iphone.
An application needs a real purpose. Optimising the website further should definately be first point of call, but maybe elements of social media/integration with other things would make an application work. Very loose thoughts here, as I distract myself from work further…
– embedding YouTube content
– LBS to find events/mobile companies etc.
– sponsoring links to the App Store
– 'shake' feedback……invite readers to shake phone up and down if they rate a story highly, or left to right if they don't.
Oh dear!
Ah excellent, excellent! Keep the ideas coming?
Suggestions for some LBS:
There have been # MIR readers within a mile of your current location during the last 24 hours.
The nearest $operator shop is # miles South of your current location.
If its possible to get cell tower locations then you could have – The nearest $operator cell tower is # miles North of your current location.
Oh definitely like those!

I think it should be an animated, screen-sized version of Dan Lane's face which reads you the news from the site….
Just wipe his face to move to the next story or pinch his nose to pause the audio..
'Pinch' his piercings to make him cry?
Maybe wipe his mouth to stop his swearing?
How about using the core location API so that the app could tell you when other readers of the blog were close by?
An application that emits an electrical current or perhaps a small dose of valium when someone compares an N95 to an iPhone. Not to discount the sheer wonderfulness of the N95 but it is the same comment every time.
The medical trials might get expensive
Why can't there be an S60 application too 🙁 – I don't want a Jesus Phone!
Because you need a degree in nuclear physics to programme an S60 application
– Video comments integration?
So I'd start the iPhone app, pick a post from a simple list, click a button, record my monologue, click another button to upload the video as a comment to the post.
– Build a social community?
Have a feature on such app to sync profiles of the registered folks with your contact list on the phone. Or maybe have them presented as IM buddies and allow sending them private messages or reading their recent comments or something like that.
