Ottumwa parents get text messaging. You know Ottumwa, right?

If you live in the Outtumwa school district — you know Ottumwa — down Iowa way? Well, you’re lucky. You can sign up to get updates from your child’s school by text. So reports one of those amusingly-named American television stations (“KTVO”).

The Ottumwa School District believes that parents will be better informed of cancellations, delays, emergencies and other information if distributed through these new venues.

If you live in London, tough.

  1. yeah i mean in one of schools at uni they are trialling cancelled lectures etc and letting students know via text the service is going really well. They are finding one big issue that a lot of students who are international and have international numbers are being charged for receiving text messages so they are hesitant to roll it out across the whole uni. If they make it opt in, I am sure it will work well!

  2. No, not tough necessarily “tough”.

My School introduced a text service, last year or so. It doesn't inform my Mum when the School is closed (which it should have done on a Snow Day), but say if either me or my brother don't arrive at School for morning registration, a text is sent out.

It was introduced to stop truenting, but as far as some friends are concerned, hiding your parents phone, and making them believe they have lost it, is more than enough!
And it's also used so the school can keep a tab on how long we're out of school due to sickness.

The problem is, that you can't reply via text back to the school about the reason your child isn't at School. For my Mum who has a speaking impediment, it's extremely annoying as she can't phone up. It would be common-sense to implement this a little better.

  3. I can try and find out later, I'm in for a Sixth Form interview.

I doubt they'll tell me though, as I doubt the receptionist ladies will know.

    Samantha.

  4. True, but the system was advertised as being “quick” to update the School on your child's status, whereas if you phone up the number sent in the text you have to go through a long menu, and wait forever until someone has got back from getting their tea.

  5. It's just to finalise my options, and to ensure I know what I want to do.
Also, I think it's so to make sure we're all happy with our results, a bit late seeing as they were two weeks ago.

Ahh, it was a forgone conclusion that they wanted me ages ago! Being as wonderful as I am, and all! 😛
