This is by no means exhaustive – the information had to be extracted from reluctant shop staff over the phone today, but for those looking for cheaper or shorter tariffs with the G1 than the £40 per month option advertised here’s the best bits of what you need to know as promised:
Combi 25 (150 mins / 150 SMS per month) for 12 months:
£129.99 device and £30 per month = £489.99
Combi 30 (300 mins / 200 SMS per month) for 12 months:
£100 device and £35 per month = £520
Combi 35 (500 mins / 375 SMS per month) for 12 months:
£50 device and £40 per month = £530
Flext 30 (up to 700 mins / 1400 texts or any mix ) for 18 months:
£70 device and £30 per month = £610
Flext 35 (up to 1000 mins / 2000 texts or any mix) for 18 months:
£39.99 device and £35 per month = £669.99
Flext 40 (Up to 1250 mins / 2500 texts or any mix) for 18 months:
Free device and £40 per month = £720
Note: Combi prices include mandatory £5 per months ‘unlimited’ data bundle. Flext prices include data bundle free under current promotion (this month). Combi 18 month options are also available at similar price points to Flext tariffs. Flext is not available on 12 month tariffs.
Ahhh… facts… 🙂
“Ahhh… facts… “
Not quite. 40 x 18 = 720
Ooops… good spot.
Fixed.
I rung T-mobile around the north today seeing if I could leech a discount. Some tried but all gave a resounding “NO”. Something that did come of it was that they all offered the Combi 25 for £30 a month x 18 months with 300 mins talk and 300 texts, the Phone would be £70.
The thing is your list only gives 12month Combi's and not one store offered me the Flexi packages. I only read your post after ringing them so I will see what I can learn tomorrow but obviously based on your findings the Flexi 30 is best of all. I will keep you posted of what I find.
Do you imagine they are fiddling with their Tariffs since you rang them?
I think they're just trying to avoid selling the lower comission tariffs. From memory the Combi tarriffs were also available on 18 month durations, but the Flet packages looked better value to me over that term.
It's worth noting that the ony places I got these prices from was T-mobile's own staff briefing sheet which I borrowed when the store got busy and the chap wanted to serve someone else and T-Mobile's sales people over the phone… perhaps the latter is worth a try?
Do T-Mobile allow you to switch your contract lower after a few months?
I believe so, but from memory the sheet I copied these details from had limits and warnings about subsidies so I'd assume it's not possible to better the TCOs here.
Hi again,
I rang the 0800 sales number today and after directing the sales chap to what would give me the flext he hit the spot. He said it's as advertised on the web with 700 mins or 1400 texts or whatever mix and the handset is £69.99. He made out like he was doing me a favour on the £5 web&walk for free. but this was thrown in at all stores so obviously it's their bargaining chip not realising I knew this was an existing deal. Being a good bargain hunter I asked about discount on the phone upfront cost and he said “NO” as I'd expected, he did offer to push the handset cost onto my next bill giving me a month to find the £70 so they are helpful enough but cash off would be better:D
I will drop you a line If I can hold out any longer or actually win them over on discounts but for now I'm very glad it's possible on a cheaper tariff, great find Ben.

Hey Guys have you seen the new Tariffs, Much better.

Seems like they cut the price by nearly £10 or at least the cost of the devise and dropped the free minutes and texts.
Either way it's far more appealing.
I walked into my local T-Mobile store and they told me I could get a G1 at £199 for the device plus £20 per month on an 18 month contract. Great if you don't want to get tied down to a big monthly payout. Its only 100 minutes and 100 texts but to be honest I'm only buying it to play around with Android so I'm not interested in all the frills and freebies
true, but the 18 months at £30 quid makes it £19 cheaper over the 18 months. (£10 difference x 18 months) plus you get alow extra minutes or texts so the £30 + free phone is probably your best bet.
Following on from JohnHunsley's post. Managed to get the same sort of deal for combi 15 + web n walk plus. Good for playing around with G1
Combi 15 (100 mins / 200 SMS per month) for 18 months:
£97.87 device and £20 per month = £457.87
