Dual Sim Android handset coming soon

I just met with some chaps who will, they tell me, have a dual sim Android handset hitting the marketplace “in the very near term.”

I pressed them further, but they would only commit to “quite a few weeks away” and in terms of cost, “it will be very competitively priced”.

“Sub $200?” I pressed, “Well [nodding] it’ll be very competitive priced.”

So this is very exciting news for the handset marketplace.

The company in question is an independent manufacturer — and they’re seriously innovating.

I can’t wait to see what they deliver.

Dual Sim will be, I reckon, a magic bullet for a heck of a lot of people. I am hugely attracted by the concept of being able to walk about with both a Vodafone UK and a T-Mobile USA sim in my phone. And then choosing which I want to use currently. Or using the likes of MAXroam or a PAYG sim.

I’m also interested as to whether it will be possible to have both sims running concurrently on the device. Or if that is going to confuse the operating system.

On the grapevine I’ve heard of a few other independent small companies planning their own Android handset launches soon. So as well as the megabrands such as HTC, Samsung and so-on, we should be seeing quite a healthy Android marketplace over the next 6-9 months.

Can you see yourself buying an Android handset with Dual Sim capability for a few hundred US dollars?

  1. Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, YES.

One for my international phone number, one for my local data card.

I've been waiting for a dual-sim smartphone for a long time. As they become affordable, then people may not bother getting operator subsidies, which opens them up for availability.

I just hope this is the real thing, not like the ZZZPhone…

I'm actually glad it's Android that's the platform that got there first.

  2. My answer to is yes i would definitely buy a dual sim card with Android in it. For now i’m carrying 2 mobile phones and i thought of buying a Acer DX900 (http://www.acer.com/smartphone/spech1.html) but finally i did not buy it simply because it has a windows mobile in it! (heard of windows mobile is not stable and always hang)

  3. Yep yep, I used to have a dogdy phone from China which came with dual sim capability (seems most chinese phones have this function as standard). Although the handset was poor, having the option of two sim card was very useful for both my personal and work numbers. If you're looking for sim only contracts to use, Im involved with a site which offers sim deals.

  4. So how does dual sim actually work? You have 2 sims in one phone but are they both active at the same time? I have a phone for work and I just signed up for a SIM Only deal for personal use. I currently have 2 separate handsets. Can I use them both at the same time on a dual sim phone? And what happens if both sim (phone numbers) ring at the same time? Which one does the handset answer?
