If you are planning on coming to the United States any time soon and you’re planning to be out-and-about (that is, not chained to a specific hotel or office with WiFi), you’ll probably be giving a lot of thought about data roaming costs.

I recommend dumping your existing operator’s roaming expenses and picking up one of these Verizon Jetpacks (their name for their WiFi hotspots).

Verizon has just launched the 4G LTE Novatel Wireless 4510L MiFi unit costing just $129.99 on a pay-as-you-go basis.

And this is proper 4G. It will be screaming fast. I haven’t used this model but I’ve used similar ones from Verizon and found them to be utterly brilliant.

Data pricing is highly reasonable too — $20 for 1GB.

You’ll be able to pick up the 4510L MiFi in all sorts of stores including Best Buy (a favourite of mine), RadioShack (they’re usually to be found in city centre locations) and Walmart.

If you’ve got lots of data intensive demos to do — or you just want to stay connected without paying your UK operator something like £3 per megabyte, seriously think about getting a MiFi unit from Verizon.

(I should point out that other operators are available — I’ve had a great experience with Sprint too.)
