MoDaCo announces new T-Mobile data service plans

Link: EXCLUSIVE: Revamped T-Mobile web’n’walk tariffs – MoDaCo.

My heart jumped for a moment when I read the headline. For a moment I thought T-Mobile executives might have changed their minds with the £7.50/month plan. Not a bit of it. Here’s the gossip that Paul revealed tonight:

For £7.50 per month…Web browsing and E-Mail access only. 1GB fair use policy.

For £12.50 a month…Web browsing, Email, Modem Use, Streaming Media, Downloads and IM (NO VOIP). 3GB fair usage policy.

For £22.50 a month…Everything, including VOIP. 10GB fair usage policy.[b]There will also be a dedicated data card tariff.

Wow. Due to go live early October apparently.

They’ve always been ahead of the game haven’t they?

May I take this moment to remind everyone that Orange are currently charging £75 a month for their unlimited data package (inc unlimited texts & 1200 mins) — but for OFF PEAK data. Idiots.

So this is good. I was wondering how T-Mobile were going to address the fact that when I go and get myself an N93, I’ll be wanting to send 50mb videos from my handset. Pretty soon, the 1gb/month fair use policy is going to be wiped out.

Then you’ve got the question of VOIP, streaming media and so on. £22.50 a month for 10gb … that works. I don’t mind that at all.

Paul also commented:

It remains to be seen exactly how T-Mobile are going to ensure people are only using the correct services within their package, but technically, it can be done.

Redknee can apparently do that.

So, steady as she goes. All is good in the world. And if you’re being stiffed by Orange with your mobile data plan — or, worse, £2.35 a meg on Vodafone — let me also take this opportunity to tell you that you’re totally out of your mind.
