17 million messages – new SMS record set for New Year holidays in Sweden
The New Year holidays resulted in a fireworks of SMS messaging in Telia’s mobile network, with New Year’s celebrants in Sweden sending slightly more than 17 million SMS messages, of which as many as 10 million on New Year’s Eve. This is a new SMS record and an increase of 54 percent over last year. The statistics also indicate where Swedes have family and friends in other countries.
Sending New Year wishes to family and friends during the New Year holidays is becoming more and more popular. In Telia’s mobile network last year, 11 million SMS messages were sent during the New Year holidays, of which 6.7 million on New Year’s Eve.
This press release rocks. I don’t know why British mobile operators can’t produce this sort of stuff. Instead we’re lumbered with drab rubbish about how flexible (read: ‘shit’) their price plans are.
Click the link above and have a read. It’s quite fascinating. As well as telling you the key festive traffic information and breaking it down by Christmas/New Year, they’ve taken a look at the external message traffic.
For example, Swedish TeliaSonera customers sent almost 22,000 texts to the United Kingdom.
Only one text went to the Vatican State. Heh. I wonder who to, eh?
Poland got 8,100 texts.
Djibouti got 1.
I couldn’t spot Djibouti in a line up at 10 paces. Let along spell it, if I didn’t have a clipboard copy and paste function. I’m usually pretty good with locations. Virtues of a Scottish education. But I’m no Djibouti expert.
Where on EARTH is Djibouti?
Before I do a Wikipedia look-up, I’m going to guess it’s on the African continent, right?
You can play along at home.
I’m looking it up.
If I get the continent right, by the way, I reckon I should order a pizza tomorrow.
Bit of a reward. Agree?
