Got this mail in from a reader…
Ewan, hi
I am struck by anecdotal reports of 3GS users who have updated to OS4 saying that their phone now regularly reboots 3-4 minutes into a call, so much so that they need to use another phone for business calls as Apple provides no way of switching back to OS3.
Have you picked this up? If so, it is a really damning fact for Apple’s QA, and completely undermines the idea that “our software works”.
I have upgraded both my 3GS and my 3G iPhone and both appear to be functioning ok. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?
Also shows how even the best of them needs to deal much better with h/w fragmentation.
I've an iPod touch 2G, it's interminably slow with iOS4. Random crashes with apps too, I guess on acct of miniscule RAM for the OS.
Normally, one would expect newer mobile software to be better on RAM & battery; Apple obviously marches to a different beat :-
Not entirely related then?
True, wanted a channel to vent 😉
I feel your pain
My 3GS has begun to freeze periodically requiring a hard reset since upgrading to OS4. It hasn't done this while I've been on a call though, only when using Safari or trying to open particular apps.
My iPhone 3G is now horrendously slow with iOS4, almost unusable.
No problems whatsoever – iPhone 3GS on latest software – Vodafone supplier. BTW your website is not cross browser compliant – it corrupts in Firefox. Richard C
Firefox? Who uses Firefox any more? 😉
I have the problem that the screen shows the Apple and phone calls are cut off after a few minutes into a call,
I have an iPhone 3GS and am now running iOS 4.0.1 and since moving to the new os have lost some signal strength and I thought that could not get any worse. I tried using the map program this week and it had problems. I could get the map and the blue dot but it never could come up with directions. I got to my location and it was still trying to figure out how to get there. I also lost the ability to get to my Exchange Server. That was a reported bug with iOS 4.0 but 4.0.1 was supposed to fix this. At a book club meeting this week every iPhone user there was experiencing problems except for the one who had not upgraded.
No probs so far ,o2 coverage is not as good as other s, but all other features regarding new OS is fine.
After I upgraded my 3GS to 4.0, I noticed that the battery is used up much faster; it can't last all night without entirely discharging. I either have to plug it into a charger or turn it off completely and then I can' t use it as an alarm clock or receive an emergency call. Also my voicemail began to constantly ask for a password that I don't know.
Turning off 3G and Cellular Data appears to have solved these problems. I am afraid to upgrade to 4.0.1
I upgraded my Iphone 3GS to OS 4.0 and lately to 4.0.1 and 4.0.2. The phone now has problems with 3G and WiFi connections. Both types of connections hang daily. When that happens, the browser or e-mail apps try to connect forever without success.
There several ways to temporarily fix the connection: Restart the phone, Enable/Disable 3G or WiFi.
I am greatly disappointed the neither my provider – Fido Canada or Apple are willing to come up with a solution for this problem. My phone worked perfectly under OS3.
