SMS Text News announces unlimited browsing option for all users

I’m delighted to announce that you are entitled to unlimited* browsing of SMS Text News!

* Unlimited is subject to a fair use policy of one page, per unique user, per month

Heh. What a mockery the word ‘unlimited’ is nowadays, particularly in the mobile industry. Have a read of Alex’s point here about Orange’s ‘unlimited’ data plan coming soon…

Apparently it’s available from 1st June.. and it’s not quite ‘unlimited’ data, more like ‘unlimited’ browsing. Unlimited, of course, having undergone a makeover at some point in the past few years, and now meaning ‘with limit’ instead of it’s previous definition that we all came to know (and love) of ‘without limit’.

    Its going to be interesting to see what Orange do about their fair use policy. Information submitted by both Orange and Vodafone recently points to peer to peer applications (such as IM, Skype, VOIP) will not be included in this type of bundle (look how both of these operators handled the N95′s VOIP capabilities).

    How the operators manage this and feed the information back to their subscribers will – no doubt – cause more headaches than they suspect.

    Hi there, I’m thinking of going abroad. Can you tell me if I need to upgrade my SMSTextNews service to be able to access your website while roaming outside of the UK? If I do this and also post responses to your blog will I be charged per post and will you also have to pay to receive the overseas responses?

    Steve, thank you for enquiring about upgrading your SMSTextNews UNLIMITED account to enable international roaming.

    Great news! International roaming is available and since you’re already an UNLIMITED subscriber, you’ll enjoy super access rates.

    Rates start at £4 per download, per page in all European countries. However, do keep in mind that you’ll also have to pay for the data charges to receive the page (equivalent to £26 per page, per download). We won’t add that up and tell you what the reality of standard usage is, because if we did, I’m sure you’d cancel your account right now.

    Please remember that you need to call us BEFORE you leave the country to enable international roaming, so that we have sufficient time to update your billing level to AR5E.
