How long before the latest Samsung or Sony Ericsson will sport a 20 megapixel camera?
Two new coprocessors have been announced which provide up to 20MP capabilities for 3G camera phones. Texas Instruments say that the new coprocessors provide up to 20 Megapixel still imaging capabilities and 720p high-definition video recording ability. The new coprocessors are the latest additions to the OMAP-DM5x family.

But they still need 20 MP CCDs/sensors – this is only the announcement of a processor that can cope with snapping/compressing a 20 MP image from a suitable endowed sensor, isn't it?
For my money, the next big thing in mobile phone cameras will be 720p (or even higher res) video:-
– The sensors are already capable (and can oversample for a really good image)
– The difference between VGA / HD video is really quite big
– It's only the processer that has been limiting this in the last year or so, surely? So PUs like this will help (Yes it will wipe out your storage, but i'd like to have the option!)

A 20MP sensor the size required for a mobile will take really, really crap photos. The pixels will be so close together that picture noise will be appalling.
But people will fall for marketing and believe they look better.
Pah.
