Welcome to 2001

I don’t know if there’s much different in the decade since I’ve been actively visiting the States on business. Yeah they’ve obviously now, more or less, got 3G data here, but the stupid data pricing offered by Vodafone (and the rest of the US operators) is utterly, utterly inexcusable. Here’s what I got from Vodafone UK by text:

Welcome to The USA. Calls cost 135ppm to make & 100ppm to receive. SMS 35p + your home rate. Data costs start from £3 per 1MB. Click on this free link for info: http://live.vodafone.com/zr/sa1 . Call +441635691700 for free pricing info & 112 for emergency svcs

Totally indefensible, Vodafone. One pound 35 pence a minute? I’m so disappointed that we’re well into the year 2010 and all you can think to do is to continue nailing your customers for the basic, basic services abroad. You can get a lot more money from me, quicker, by offering me different and better services when I’m in the UK. Dire.

Well if you can afford to fly to the US then you can afford to pay for overpriced phone call, come on, cough up!

'spesh when they 45% own the largest network by subscribers – Verizon. AFAIK VZW don't yet run a GSM network, But Voda UK should have leant you a CDMA handset for your trip.

Er, Ok, waaaaay too much of a faff. You're doomed ;-)

That logic doesn't quite work Jondean, does it?

Well Verizon don't appear that happy with Vodafone's involvement at all…
