Iridium Networks in rude health

IMG_3903.JPG

Iridium, the uber-mobile-network and Satellite telecommunications company have posted some wicked results today.

For anyone who thought ‘didn’t they go out of business?’, here’s living proof that they’re still operational. 38% increase in subscribers. Revenue up 28%. EBITDA Up 28 Percent. Up up up. That’s the way to go.

Total revenue in the second quarter 2008 was $81.7 million versus $66.7 million in the same quarter last year, a 22 percent increase. For the six-month period that ended June 30, 2008, Iridium posted $156 million in revenue, a 31 percent increase over the first half of 2007.

That’ll do nicely.

You aren’t a man until you’ve got an Iridium Satellite Phone.

Put one of their models next to any traditional mobile handset and I defy you not to want the Iridium one more. There is something reassuring about seeing the ‘Iridium’ prompt appear on the screen together with a satellite signal indicator.

Anywhere on the planet. Love it.

  1. I never quite understood why the data access was /so/ slow – isn't it like 9600bps or something?

But yes, you're right. I want one. What do they cost to run?

I bet it only works it slightly cheaper than Vodafone 😀

  2. Don't you mean “You'll look like a man with one of these in your pocket”

    😉

Q: does it pass the Top Gear cool test? i.e. would Kirsten Scott-Thomas be impressed?

  3. Cool would be using it to deliver the ma-in-law some flowers. Keep her on-side for when chicken soup is needed.

Would you really want to be sitting off the Cote d'Azure on a yacht with K S-T lounging about gossiping to her MUM?

Once again, just because you *can* doesn't mean you *should*…
You have a strange idea of a holiday….

  4. Well my wife spent a good amount of time nattering away to her mother on the
Satphone as she walked about the deck of our Maldivian Villa. And she loved
me for it. So the lesson there: Always buy a sat phone.
