I’ve completely re-thought out how we’re going to do the MIR Awards this year.
Last year it was a ton of work. An absolute ton of work.
So this year I’m going to appoint some judges, privately publish the submitted entries so that all judges can review online, and then gather everyone’s votes and opinions by a set date.
MIR awards are always subjective, based on the opinions and perspective of the judges — there’s no voting, except right at the end.
Once the awards are announced, we will then put the category winners into a public vote here on MIR to get the ‘MIR Best In Mobile 2009’ award.
I’d welcome your suggestions for categories, particularly from any companies and PR representatives reading. Half way into the competition we had some super entries that didn’t really fit their category. I want to make sure I can get your products and services into a decent, fair category. (e.g. I’m thinking of ‘best mobile navigation app’ rather than just having ‘best mobile app’.)
Last year we didn’t give out any physical awards but I’m mulling the concept. I think it’d be nice for winners and runners-up to receive a physical award that can be displayed. If that’s the case, then I’ll need to set an entry fee. I’m not a big fan of the concept though. I’d welcome your perspective.
What do you think?
As ever, I’m on ewan@mobileindustryreview.com or get me online.
“Most cash burnt by startup with least chance of monetisation”
“Best use of Social Media to disguise The Emperor's New Clothes” (a.k.a the Spinvox Memorial Award)
Note: Could also be “Worst Abuse Of Consumer Trust Using Good Bloke As Frontman” (a.k.a the James Whatley Memorial Trophy For Honest Flagwaving While Your Bosses Are A Sack Of Lying Toads”)
I like them!
How about – Most Cringeworthy CEO in the Mobile Industry – (aka the Christina Domecq school of management and customer relationships award)
Highest Paid CEO in a Company Yet To Break Even?
Most pretentious Office Furniture award! –
I *really* like that one!
How about the Hubris award. I don't think you can top this nomination
Watch Christina Domecq taking time and company money (and staff) for the glory of biking in the Race Across America at the end of June, at the same time that she asked employees to take stock in lieu of cash salary (and we can imagine how much pressure employees felt to “voluntarily” get with the program and what a great “opportunity” it was!) and at the same time the company stopped paying health insurance benefits for the families of U.S. employees without providing notice, etc.
Sure, this video is a clear Gold Medal for hubris. But the real hubris is that days later she (and July Meyer) acted surprised that people who felt wronged by SpinVox would actually complain.
Possible categories:
“The one mobile app I can't live without”
“Most addictive game – ever!”
“Best Twitter App” (since there aren't enough of them already …)
Personal bias here: “The best new blog about mobile apps” … hint: http://www.mydailyapp.com
Also, if you need help with judging, feel free to let me know, I'd be more than happy to help out.
